# Aston Villa: Reports reveal price club will have to pay for Ross Barkley

**Ross Barkley is having a decent season whilst on [loan](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/alletransfers/verein/405) at Aston Villa, and a report has now revealed the price tag that Villa will have to pay if they want to sign him permanently.**

### The latest on Barkley

According to [90 min](https://www.90min.com/), via [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/chelsea-transfer-aston-villa-record-19790036), Villa want to sign the Englishman on a permanent deal as they push to become a side consistently battling for Europe. However, it might be hard for them as Chelsea will apparently ask for a fee in the region of £40m for the playmaker.

### Should Villa splash the cash?

The summer[loan signing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ross-barkley/profil/spieler/131978) has had a good campaign as he has managed, on average, 2.4 shots, two key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per game ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/92547/Show/Ross-Barkley)). He has also scored three goals and provided one assist.

However, £40 million is a lot of money, especially when the club have already spent around £231 million since they were promoted to England’s top-flight ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/alletransfers/verein/405)). Dean Smith spoke about Barkley earlier this season and [said](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/dean-smith-praises-ross-barkleys-impact-since-arriving-at-aston-villa-on-loan-1604136782000): “His work ethic and attitude has been tremendous. He brings us that added bit of quality that we needed.”

The England star has definitely been a crucial asset for the club and helped them get to a place where they can target a European spot this season. Therefore, this could be a huge decision for Smith and the Villa board to make.

Villa might be able to negotiate a cheaper price for Barkley but if they can’t it remains to be seen if they’d spend such a large fee on him.

The former Everton star is only [27](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/alletransfers/verein/405) and has time to grow as he reaches his prime, but it might be best if Villa looked for alternative options if they cannot negotiate a cheaper price for him.
