# Aston Villa: Sky Sports drop Calvin Bassey update

**[Aston Villa](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/aston-villa-news/) have made Rangers defender Calvin Bassey a priority defensive target, according to [Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/12619737/aston-villa-the-summer-transfer-window-and-what-they-need-to-do).**

### The Lowdown: Closing in

Villa have been extremely busy when it comes to summer signings ahead of Steven Gerrard’s first full season in charge. The club are reportedly willing to spend over [£150m](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-aston-villa-ready-to-smash-transfer-record-on-huge-signing-in-massive-new-spending-spree/) and have already made [Philippe Coutinho](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2022/may/12/villa-announce-philippe-coutinho-signing/)’s loan move permanent.

Deals for [Boubacar Kamara](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2022/may/23/villa-announce-boubacar-kamara-signing/) and [Diego Carlos](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2022/may/26/villa-agree-diego-carlos-/) have also been agreed and [reports](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/aston-villa-closing-in-on-deal-for-rangers-defender-calvin-bassey-0g5p6lqmt?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1653484956) in recent days have stated that NSWE are now closing in on a move for Rangers defender Bassey.

### The Latest: Bassey a top target

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/12619737/aston-villa-the-summer-transfer-window-and-what-they-need-to-do) reporter Dorsett provided an update on the club’s transfer plans on Tuesday morning. He stated that Gerrard wants more after Coutinho, Kamara and Carlos, adding that Bassey is a ‘key’ target.

James Tarkowski is also name-checked in the report, however, Villa correspondent [Gregg Evans](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/aston-villa-news/tarkowski-villa-transfer-latest-gregg-evans-gerrard/) has claimed that a move to the Midlands is unlikely.

### The Verdict: Get it done

Bassey starred in Scotland last season, turning out as a [centre-back and a left-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/calvin-bassey/leistungsdaten/spieler/461883), two areas that could do with bolstering at Villa Park.

Providing Ashley Young and Matt Targett leave over the coming months, Lucas Digne will be the only [senior](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/kader/verein/405) left-back available to Gerrard, so Bassey would provide adequate cover.

\[freshpress-poll id=”393243″\]

He’d also challenge for a starting spot at centre-back, where he impressed in the [Europa League final](https://metro.co.uk/2022/05/19/owen-hargreaves-heaps-praise-on-rangers-defender-calvin-bassey-after-europa-league-heartbreak-16670144/), and who knows, he could form a solid partnership with Carlos, providing a move goes through.
