### The lowdown

Gerrard took on the Villa job last November and is still putting his imprint on the role.

The 41-year-old is one of Liverpool’s greatest legends, ranking third on the club’s [all-time appearance list](https://www.lfchistory.net/Stats/PlayerAppearances) and fifth on their [goalscoring charts](https://www.lfchistory.net/Stats/PlayerGoalscorers).

His coaching career began with a stint as their Under-18 boss following his retirement.

And his backroom team at Villa already includes [former Reds Under-23 coach](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/15117/10809004/former-liverpool-u23-boss-michael-beale-enjoying-his-brazil-adventure-with-sao-paulo) Michael Beale and ex-Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister, who [played 87 games for the club](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-mcallister/leistungsdaten/spieler/10032).

### The latest

### The verdict

Gerrard will be pleased to secure this appointment – Evans notes that Roscoe’s position is ‘[very important](https://twitter.com/greggevans40/status/1522562307162845185)‘ and [will see him work closely](https://theathletic.com/news/aston-villa-boss-steven-gerrard-hires-phil-roscoe-from-liverpool/ZbaVfZiiW9xO/) with the first-team squad.

His [success stories at Anfield include](https://theathletic.com/news/aston-villa-boss-steven-gerrard-hires-phil-roscoe-from-liverpool/ZbaVfZiiW9xO/) the integration of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Raheem Sterling into the first team set-up.

It will now be interesting to see whether Gerrard looks to poach any playing staff from his alma mater this summer.

According to a report from [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-major-update-on-aston-villa-bid-to-sign-joe-gomez/), Reds centre-back Joe Gomez is his ‘no. 1 target’ ahead of the transfer window.
