# Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard eyeing Luis Suarez

Alternative title: Gregg Evans names AVFC target in Saturday tweet, he adores Gerrard

**Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will keep tabs on former team-mate Luis Suarez this summer, [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3174204/2022/03/11/luis-suarezs-last-hurrah-at-atletico-madrid/)‘s Gregg Evans says.**

### The lowdown

Suarez’s contract at Atletico Madrid is due to expire on 30 June, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-suarez/profil/spieler/44352).

He’s [started 17](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-suarez/leistungsdaten/spieler/44352) La Liga matches so far this season, but his involvement has tailed off recently.

The Uruguayan has begun [four of the last five](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-suarez/leistungsdaten/spieler/44352) league games on the bench, and was an unused substitute in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester United.

He remains second in [Atletico’s scoring charts](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/atletico-madrid/leistungsdaten/verein/13), however, with 11 for the campaign (one behind Angel Correa).

Having spent three and a half years alongside him at Liverpool, Suarez has likened Gerrard to an ‘older brother’ and said that their [‘relationship goes beyond the football field’](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2016/11/luis-suarez-thanks-steven-gerrard-like-older-brother/).

### The latest

[Evans wrote in a tweet](https://twitter.com/greggevans40/status/1502579625553272833) on Saturday morning that Suarez is definitely in his ‘last season’ at Atletico.

He says that ‘Gerrard will monitor his situation’ when the transfer window opens.

### The verdict

It seems that Gerrard would have an edge over other suitors if indeed Suarez becomes available this summer, but would it be a sensible move?

Well he may be 35, but, [as Evans notes](https://twitter.com/greggevans40/status/1502579625553272833), he hasn’t missed a game this season through injury, and his goal return is decent.

But one issue is Suarez’s [£263,000-per-week](https://salarysport.com/football/la-liga/atl%C3%A9tico/) pay packet, more than double that of Villa’s highest earner at present (Danny Ings on £120,000-p/w).

And Gerrard looks to be finding joy with existing options [Ings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/danny-ings/leistungsdaten/spieler/134294) and [Ollie Watkins](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ollie-watkins/leistungsdaten/spieler/324358) in recent matches. Combined, they’ve contributed six goals/assists in the last three.

Perhaps they simply don’t need to make the financial commitment.
