Aston Villa: Alan Hutton excited by Dean Smith’s hopes of signing Josh King - Aston Villa Transfer Rumours

Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton believes it would be “another masterstroke” if his former club managed to sign Bournemouth’s Josh King.

Hutton believes in King

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Villa Park in the past week and reports suggest that he could be unveiled by Dean Smith’s side on Friday.

King, who has scored 50 goals for the Cherries from 171 outings, was a youth prospect at Manchester United’s academy and only made two appearances for the first team before moving to Blackburn for just over £1m in 2013.

However, the 6 foot 2 Norwegian striker played a big part in maintaining Bournemouth’s Premier League status until this year. Last season, their luck ran out as they were relegated to the Championship, but King has illustrated that he’s more than capable of cutting it in England’s top flight.

Having already spent £71m on transfers and with a 100% record in the league, it’s safe to say that it’s a good time to be associated with Villa right now.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton praised the business that Villa have done during the last window and feels that the addition of King would be the icing on the cake. He said:

“I think Villa have had probably had one of the best transfer windows ever, in my opinion, they’ve done brilliantly.

“To add someone like Josh King this late one would be another masterstroke, in my opinion, it would really show what they want to do moving forward.

“There’s a lot of interest in him, I think the fee’s going to be quite big but I think the Aston Villa owners have shown they’re willing to put their hand in their pocket to achieve what they want. That’s to be a settled team in the Premier League.

“He’s a player if he comes in, he’s not only a striker – you’ve got Ollie Watkins, still got Wesley to come back, brought in Traore – there’s competition and everything’s looking good – but in the back of your mind, if Watkins picks up a wee injury, Wesley’s not back, who do you play?

Signing King could be a real statement of intent

Having a strike force of Ollie Watkins and Josh King would send a clear message to the rest of the Premier League that Villa are no longer here to simply make up the numbers. Smith has taken his team a long way in the space of two years, having taken over when they were 14th in the Championship.

Now they have talked the talk with substantial summer spending, it’s time for Villa to walk the walk on the pitch and continue to prove that they mean business.

Whether they can do that remains to be seen, although signing a proven Premier League scorer in King would be a serious statement of intent.
