Aston Villa seem to be looking to offload some of their players, and defender Frederic Guilbert is attracting interest, meaning he could leave the club this month.
The latest on Guilbert
According to Football Insider, Istanbul Basaksehir have opened talks with Aston Villa over signing Frenchman Guilbert. The Turkish side are working on a deal to take the 26-year-old right-back on loan for the rest of the season.
Should Villa let the defender leave?
The £4.5m-valued ace has struggled for game time at the club for a while now. He hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season and the last match he played in the division came back in July (Transfermarkt).
It is especially hard for him to get game time now since the arrival of Matty Cash, who has made the right-back spot his own with a solid first campaign, so far, at the club.
When Dean Smith signed Guilbert, he said: ‘He’s one who’s got an awful lot of potential’. However, it’s fair to say that he has struggled to show that potential whilst at Aston Villa.
Therefore, it is probably best if the club do let the 26-year-old depart, even if it is just on loan. He can play some more regular first-team football and the spell away might help him grow as a player. If Villa still feel that he is not to the level they need by the end of the loan, they can then look to sell him in the summer.
