Aston Villa: Matija Sarkic to quit the club this week - Aston Villa Transfer Rumours

Aston Villa goalkeeper Matija Sarkic will quit the club this week and is poised to sign for a new club, according to a report by Football Insider.

The young shot stopper, who was born in Grimsby, developed as a young keeper with Belgian side Anderlecht before making a move to Villa Park in September 2015.

Despite his arrival in the Midlands, Sarkic has been unable to gain a first team appearance for Villa having had four separate loan spells away from the club.

Spending time with Wigan Athletic, Stratford Town, Havant and Waterlooville and most recently, Livingston, Sarkic has gained some valuable experience whilst also representing the Montenegro international side once.

Free to leave Villa this summer due to his expiring contract, Sarkic is expected to do that and it could be this week with a recruitment source close to the club and Football Insider claiming the youngster has found a new club.

Sarkic, who has been offered a new deal by Villa,  was recalled from his loan spell where he was a starter with Scottish Premiership side Livingston in January to provide cover for Dean Smith’s side after Tom Heaton was injured.

However, despite his recall, the young stopper has failed to be handed a chance with Pepe Reina and Orjan Nyland sharing the role of number one.

Quite why Villa recalled Sarkic in January is a mystery, especially given that he was a starter for the Scottish side and gaining valuable first team experience – he played 18 times for Livingston and kept seven clean sheets (Transfermarkt).

It is certain that Tom Heaton is Villa’s best choice number one and when he returns to full fitness, it would almost be impossible to remove him from between the sticks, given his previous form over the first half of the season.

Added to that, the club also have Nyland and Jed Steer who is recovering from injury too, both of whom have played ahead of the 22-year-old in recent years. That would push the Montenegrin to fourth choice, so it looks the right time for him to depart and look for opportunities elsewhere.
