# Newcastle United: Chris Waugh reveals Renan Lodi transfer news

**Chris Waugh has now revealed some exciting under-the-radar [Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) transfer news on Renan Lodi.**

### The Lowdown: Left-back conundrum

The St James’ Park club currently [face a conundrum](https://theathletic.com/3332510/2022/05/26/matt-targett-newcastle-villa/) over whether to sign loanee Matt Targett on a permanent deal from Aston Villa, or go out and buy a new left-back for the 2022/23 season.

[Kieran Tierney](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/arsenal-transfer-news-tierney-premier-league/) from Arsenal is the latest such player to be linked with the switch to the northeast, although other names are now emerging into the frame.

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Waugh responded to a tweet from Luke Edwards in a [thread](https://twitter.com/mwalker2771/status/1529449477307879427) on the social media platform which may have gone under the radar.

The Telegraph reporter claimed that Atletico Madrid left-back Renan Lodi is of ‘[interest](https://twitter.com/LukeEdwardsTele/status/1529451724200607744)‘ to the Magpies, to which Waugh [replied](https://twitter.com/ChrisDHWaugh/status/1529453786133061636): *“Yeah, that is my understanding, too. ### The Verdict: Exciting

It is certainly exciting for Newcastle to be linked with a player of Lodi’s pedigree.

He [played](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renan-lodi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/476352/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) in the Champions League this season for Atletico, with [27 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renan-lodi/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/476352) in the tournament throughout his career, and helped them to win the La Liga [title](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renan-lodi/erfolge/spieler/476352) last year ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

While a deal for Targett is still [up in the air](https://theathletic.com/3332510/2022/05/26/matt-targett-newcastle-villa/), it is good for the Toon to have Lodi as an alternative option, not least when you look at his attacking output.

In addition to his [four goals and five assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/renan-lodi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/476352/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) from 42 games this season, the 24-year-old ranks in the 93rd percentile for touches in the opposition penalty area and the 98th percentile for progressive passes among full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues (as per [FBRef](https://fbref.com/en/players/ed9f7cfe/Renan-Lodi)). Just imagine him rampaging up and down the touchline for Newcastle…
