# Barcelona: Coutinho completes Bayern Munich loan move

**Bayern Munich have signed Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho on a season-long loan, [via BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49392631).**

The German champions have paid Barca €8.5m (£7.78m) for the Brazilian’s services, with a further €120m (£109.84m) option to buy him next summer should things work out at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern will also take on the 27-year-old’s wages this season, freeing up some cash which Barca could look to use on Neymar, [who is reportedly keen on rejoining his former side](https://www.skysports.com/app/transfer/news/12691/11787335/neymar-left-out-by-paris-saint-germain-again-as-future-remains-in-question).

Despite scoring [21 goals in 76 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/profil/spieler/80444) in Spain, Coutinho hasn’t lived up to the club’s exceptionally high expectations since his [£142m move from Liverpool last January](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42580173), evident from the criticism he has come in for [from the Catalan press](https://www.sport-english.com/en/news/barca/analysing-philippe-coutinhos-performance-crisis-at-barcelona-7298822).

The former Inter Milan midfielder was linked to a host of European clubs this summer – notably [Manchester United](https://www.sportsjoe.ie/football/philippe-coutinho-man-united-transfer-195608), [Arsenal](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2848666-report-arsenal-turn-down-philippe-coutinho-loan-focused-on-defensive-signings) and [Tottenham](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1133430/Tottenham-transfer-news-Philippe-Coutinho-Barcelona) – but has now linked up with Bayern as the Bavarian outfit look to win their eighth consecutive league title this season.

Offloading Coutinho considerably fuels speculation surrounding a return for former attacker Neymar.

The Catalans are currently [favourites to re-sign the Brazilian](https://www.oddschecker.com/insight/football/20190813-neymar-80pp-likely-to-re-join-barcelona-according-to-bookies) after a two-year spell away from the Camp Nou, with Coutinho initially rumoured to be used as part of the deal with PSG to bring him back to Spain.

However, after [a reported bid of £74m plus the midfielder was turned down](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7353871/Barcelona-FAIL-opening-Neymar-bid-Paris-Saint-Germain-reject-74m-plus-Philippe-Coutinho.html) by the Ligue 1 big-hitters, it allowed Bayern more time to acquire their newest recruit.

Although Coutinho struggled for consistent form in Spain, his performances for Liverpool proved what an unbelievably talented player he is.

The 27-year-old became a fan favourite at Anfield after scoring [54 goals and providing 45 assists in 201 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444) for the Reds, so will look to regain that scintillating form in Germany as Bayern look to win the Champions League for the first time in seven years.
