# Barnsley: Daniel Stendel convinced that goals and wins will come

**Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel remains confident that his team can become more prolific in front of goal and will soon arrest a lengthy winless streak.**

Speaking with the club’s official website [barnsleyfc.co.uk](https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2019/september/stendel-reaction-forest-away/), he felt that his team were better than Nottingham Forest for long periods during [Saturday’s 0-1 defeat](https://www.skysports.com/football/n-forest-vs-barnsley/report/409439), their [eighth match in all competitions without a win](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-barnsley/spielplandatum/verein/349) and [third in a row without scoring](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-barnsley/spielplandatum/verein/349).

Stendel told [barnsleyfc.co.uk](https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2019/september/stendel-reaction-forest-away/): “In our last three games, we had more chances to score than in our first four games before but we’ve not scored a goal – this is crazy, but it’s reality.

“This is our team and we’ve shown that we can win games in this league and I hope we can change the results and be happy.”

Goalscoring has become a major issue for Barnsley this season – with just four goals from their first eight league matches, they are the lowest scorers in the Championship. \[[via Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table)\]

Based on their current average of 0.5 goals per game, they are currently on course to end the season with 23 league goals – West Brom, the [highest scorers in the division](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table), already have [15](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table), while [six players have scored more on their own](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/torschuetzenliste/wettbewerb/GB2/saison_id/2019) than Barnsley have as a squad.

In five matches since drawing 2-2 against Charlton, the Reds have managed one solitary goal, while they have failed to win since defeating Fulham on the opening weekend of the season. \[[via TransferMarkt.co.uk](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-barnsley/spielplandatum/verein/349)\]

Stendel has a point when he claims that Barnsley are at least creating chances – they have averaged [13.8 shots per game in the Championship so far this season (via WhoScored)](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/142/Show/England-Barnsley) but scored only 0.5 goals per game, which works out at one goal for every 27.6 shots, a rather dismal success rate.

In their last two matches against Leeds and Nottingham Forest, they had [17](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1381438/Live/England-Championship-2019-2020-Barnsley-Leeds) and [16](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1381445/Live/England-Championship-2019-2020-Nottingham-Forest-Barnsley) shots respectively, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. They actually had [five more shots than the home side at the City Ground on Saturday](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1381445/Live/England-Championship-2019-2020-Nottingham-Forest-Barnsley) but could not take advantage of that supremacy.

While they had been affected by the absence of [last season’s joint top scorer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/barnsley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/349/plus/0?reldata=%262018) Cauley Woodrow [for three games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cauley-woodrow/leistungsdaten/spieler/169801) due to a [calf injury](https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/football/barnsley-award-winner-cauley-woodrow-confident-tide-will-turn-1-10005513) and [sold](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49242916) the [other top scorer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/barnsley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/349/plus/0?reldata=%262018) Kieffer Moore to Wigan, Barnsley’s hit rate in front of goal has simply not been good enough.

Wingers Luke Thomas and Mallik Wilks have [one goal each from 715 and 680 minutes respectively](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-barnsley/leistungsdaten/verein/349). Midfielders Mike Bahre and Alex Mowatt have [yet to find the net in 535 and 527 minutes respectively](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-barnsley/leistungsdaten/verein/349), especially disappointing for the latter after his [eight goals last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/barnsley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/349/plus/0?reldata=%262018).

Stendel is justified in his belief that Barnsley will improve their scoring return, as the chances are being created, while their [next game is at home to Brentford](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/142/Fixtures/England-Barnsley), the [next lowest scorers in the Championship with just five goals](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table).

However, if their lack of end product continues to affect them after another eight games, then Stendel’s current optimism could well give way to grave concern.
