Barnsley could be set to add to their attacking options with the potential addition of a former Ajax youth forward who has been on trial at the club.

Football Insider reported that teenage attacker Deabeas Owusu-Sekyere underwent a trial at Oakwell and may have impressed sufficiently to earn himself a contract with the Championship side.

Football Insider added that the 19-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Portuguese club Leixoes during the summer.

Indeed, the attacker is believed to keen on a permanent move to England to ignite his career.

Owusu-Sekyere is a product of the Ajax youth academy and played alongside the likes of Justin Kluivert and Matthijs de Ligt at youth level, as noted by Football Insider.

Having failed to make the grade with the Amsterdam club, though, he joined FC Twente as a youth player, where he scored twice in 19 appearances.

He was last with the under-23 side at Leixoes but never appeared for their first team - indeed, he has yet to play a competitive match at senior level. [via TransferMarkt]

He could now become part of a Barnsley squad with a paltry return of eight goals from 12 matches in all competitions this season, with half of that total coming in their last three games. [via TransferMarkt]

The Tykes are winless in 11 games since beating Fulham at the start of August, with just three draws in that period, and look set to go into the weekend's clash against Swansea with Adam Murray in temporary charge following the departure of former manager Daniel Stendel earlier this month, as per Football Insider.

Cauley Woodrow is the only Barnsley player with more than one goal to his name this season, having hit three in 791 minutes of gametime (one every 263.67 minutes), with just five other players managing to register a goal for the club more than two months into the campaign. [via TransferMarkt]

It is a sign of Barnsley's woes in front of goal that they are willing to take a punt on an attacking player who has never featured competitively at senior level, let alone scored.

However, there is nothing to be lost from at least giving Owusu-Sekyere a few opportunities to prove himself, as the other forwards at the club (with the exception of Woodrow) just haven't provided enough of a scoring threat this season.

Barnsley fans, do you think the club should offer Owusu-Sekyere a contract or would he add anything much to the team's attack? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
