# ‘Big gain for Everton’ – Fans delighted on Twitter as star drops huge news

**Wayne Rooney’s return to Everton was celebrated both often and loudly by the Toffees here in the Transfer Tavern.**

While the 31-year-old is a hugely divisive figure in English football, few would doubt the fact that his presence gives any team a huge platform.

So, the recent news he’d retired from international football today has sparked reaction online. Wazza is the Three Lions’ record goalscorer, though hasn’t always felt the love of the nation.

He [recently revealed](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/08/21/wayne-rooney-plans-talks-gareth-southgate-next-days/) he’d have a chat with Gareth Southgate after two goals in his two games for Everton, though has now taken the decision to permanently retire from England duty.

One of the most divisive England players of all time, today marks the end of a controversial career for the Three Lions, one that had tongues talking for well over a decade.

With that in mind, here’s a look at how Everton fans reacted online to Rooney’s international retirement.

> He got a lot of stick, but no one can deny Wayne Rooney's immense contribution. As [#England](https://twitter.com/hashtag/England?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)'s top scorer, he has set the bar high [#MUFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/MUFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) [#EFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/EFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

> Rooney still has a lot of life in his legs and England's loss may well prove [#EFC](https://twitter.com/hashtag/EFC?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) gain, but I can't help but feel this is not what he wants
