# Sunderland: Scott Wilson reveals John Ruddy transfer news

**The Northern Echo journalist Scott Wilson has now revealed some transfer news on reported [Sunderland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/) target John Ruddy.**

### The Lowdown: Sunderland target

It has been widely [reported](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/sunderland-john-ruddy-wolves-norwich-neil-stadium-of-light-nixon-latest-transfer-news-rumours-updates-patterson/) that the 35-year-old has been a target for the [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/) club this summer, given that they only have [one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/startseite/verein/289) goalkeeper in their senior squad at the moment in Anthony Patterson.

Ruddy is [out of contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-ruddy/profil/spieler/29712) having left Wolves, so he can sign for any club as a free agent.

### The Latest: Birmingham bound

Taking to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, [Wilson](https://twitter.com/Scottwilsonecho/status/1547548494927433729) has now revealed that, while Sunderland ‘have been seriously considering’ a move for the goalkeeper, he now looks to be heading to Championship rivals Birmingham City.

Sharing a link to his article for [The Northern Echo](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/20279114.sunderland-john-ruddy-set-sign-birmingham-city/), the reporter tweeted: *“#SAFC have been seriously considering John Ruddy as a goalkeeper signing – but the former England international looks to be heading to Birmingham instead…”*

### The Verdict: Blow for Sunderland

Of course it is a blow for the Black Cats to miss out on one of their targets, especially to a Championship rival.

Backed to be an ‘[absolutely cracking signing](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/sunderland-eyeing-john-ruddy-transfer-wolves-alex-neil/)‘ by podcaster and Sunderland supporter Philip West, 35-year-old would have been the perfect candidate to help Patterson along with his vast experience, while also being able to deputise for the 22-year-old when needed.

The Englishman has amassed [more than 450](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-ruddy/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/29712) senior appearances at club level throughout his career, including 163 in the Championship ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-ruddy/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/29712/wettbewerb/GB2)), so he would have been a shrewd signing on a free transfer had the Black Cats managed to beat Birmingham to his signature.
