# Sunderland: Black Cats could lose Ross Stewart

**[Sunderland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/) could reportedly lose Ross Stewart in the January transfer window, as [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/) rivals Blackburn Rovers could sign the striker if they sell Ben Brereton Diaz.**

### The Lowdown: New contract?

Earlier this week, the Black Cats’ sporting director Kristjaan Speakman [revealed](https://twitter.com/JHunterChron/status/1565679441434611712) that the Wearside club have been engaged in ongoing talks over a new contract for the 26-year-old.

The Scotland international has one year left on his current deal at the Stadium of Light, and the club has an option of a further year.

### The Latest: Blackburn prepare Stewart offer

As per [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/19699976/ben-brereton-diaz-transfer-ross-stewart-blackburn-sunderland/), Blackburn could offer Stewart a better contract in January and will make a move if they lose Brereton Diaz.

Everton, Fulham and Leeds United all missed out on the Chilean in the summer transfer window, with the Toffees bidding £12m with add-ons which could have risen to £20m.

### The Verdict: Worrying

If Rovers do bring in the money by selling Brereton Diaz, and still maintain their place [near the top](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table) of the Championship table, then it will certainly be worrying for Black Cats supporters.

Hailed by Speakman as [‘incredible’](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/rangers-among-clubs-chasing-ross-24080445) last season, Stewart finished as Sunderland’s top scorer with [26](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sunderland-afc/leistungsdaten/verein/289/plus/0?reldata=%262021) goals, helping them to fire their way to promotion from League One.
