# Brighton: Ezequiel Schelotto set for summer exit amid transfer interest from Genoa

**A latest report in Italian media has claimed that Serie A side Genoa are [interested](https://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/serie-a/tmw-brighton-schelotto-si-svincola-a-giugno-c-e-il-genoa-su-di-lui-1392036) in making a summer move for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ezequiel Schelotto this summer.**

The former Italy international joined the Seagulls in [2017](https://web.archive.org/web/20170901024048/https://www.brightonandhovealbion.com/news/2017/august/albion-sign-argentine-defender/) from Portuguese side Sporting CP but despite early impressions during his first season at the club, he has [failed to hold down a first team place](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ezequiel-schelotto/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/119164).

Making [31 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ezequiel-schelotto/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/119164) for the Premier League club since arriving, Schelotto has also spent time on loan in Italy with Chievo, where he [featured four times last season.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ezequiel-schelotto/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/119164)

Having had his future discussed earlier this season, with [Tuttomercatoweb](https://sportwitness.co.uk/agent-says-brighton-player-will-welcome-move-to-specific-club-other-sides-looking-at-potters-man/) claiming that the player’s agent was in talks with a number of clubs, Schelotto now looks set for a summer departure.

Born in Buenos Dias in Argentina, the 31-year-old’s current contract expire this summer with Brighton, and [TMW’s headline reads *‘Schelotto is released in June’*](https://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/serie-a/tmw-brighton-schelotto-si-svincola-a-giugno-c-e-il-genoa-su-di-lui-1392036) – suggesting that a move back to Italy is his likeliest destination.

Genoa, who are 17th in Serie A, have their top-flight status hanging in the balance, so the prospects of them landing the defender could depend on whether they survive the relegation battle.

Quite why Schelotto has had such a lack of first team football over the last few years is surprising. The full-back has talent and quality, averaging [1.1 tackles and 0.8 successful dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/79442/History/Ezequiel-Schelotto) per game in his debut Premier League season.

However, his impending exit from Brighton on a free transfer is understandable as he can now seek regular first team football elsewhere. A move back to Italy, where he has [played most regularly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ezequiel-schelotto/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/119164), makes perfect sense for everyone involved.
