# Brighton & Hove Albion: Juan Foyth linked with potential Seagulls move

**Brighton have apparently taken an interest in a potential move for Tottenham defender [Juan Foyth](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/spurs-juan-foyth-linked-villarreal-mourinho/), according to reports from Spanish media.**

The print edition of [El Periódico Mediterráneo](https://www.elperiodicomediterraneo.com/) claimed \[via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/tottenham-defender-leeds-uniteds-brightons-agenda-players-future-managers-hands/)\] that the 22-year-old is on the ‘agenda’ of the Seagulls, along with Leeds and Brighton. However, Villarreal appear to be in pole position for the [10-cap Argentina international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/nationalmannschaft/spieler/480763/verein_id/3437), with ex-Arsenal boss and [three-time Europa League-winning manager](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/unai-emery/erfolge/trainer/5075) Unai Emery hoping to bring him to El Madrigal.

Earlier this week, [AS](https://as.com/) reported \[via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/jose-mourinho-discards-tottenham-player-opens-door-exit-spurs-not-sure/)\] that Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to discard the defender, but the north London club do not want to move him on permanently.

Foyth has made [32 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/480763/verein/148) for Tottenham but was reduced to a peripheral role last season after Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino, with the 22-year-old playing just [seven matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/480763) in all of 2019/20, most recently in [late December](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/480763/verein/148).

Although [injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/verletzungen/spieler/480763) did not help his cause, nor did a [much-maligned](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/tottenham/tottenham-hotspur-fans-slam-juan-foyth-after-norwich-draw/) first half performance at Norwich on his most recent appearance, one which saw him [hooked by his manager at the interval](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3219271).

Foyth has a good tackling record, winning [1.8 per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/335107/History/Juan-Foyth) last term despite his sporadic game-time – that was a notably higher average than [regular Brighton centre-backs](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton) Lewis Dunk ([1.1](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton)) and Adam Webster ([one](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton)).

However, the Argentine recorded [less than one aerial duel, interception and clearance](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/335107/History/Juan-Foyth) per game in 2019/20, while his passing success rate of [82.1%](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/335107/History/Juan-Foyth) was lower than both Dunk ([87%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton)) and Webster ([83.1%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton)).

Furthermore, competition for centre-back places at the Amex Stadium has been heightened by the return of Ben White – on whom Brighton slapped a [£50m price tag](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12418521/ben-white-transfer-leeds-man-utd-liverpool-chelsea/) amid [multiple bids from Leeds](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11741/12060405/ben-white-brighton-defender-close-to-agreeing-improved-new-contract) – from his loan spell at Elland Road, as well as [summer arrival](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/18615784.albion-sign-ajax-defnder-joel-veltman/) of former Ajax defender Joel Veltman.

Foyth is already familiar with the English top flight and has [played in the Champions League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/juan-foyth/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/480763), so a move to Brighton is unlikely to faze him or require a lengthy bedding-in period.

\[freshpress-poll id=”317693″\]

However, the intense battle for centre-back places at the Amex means that he couldn’t be guaranteed regular action under Potter, nor would he discernibly improve their back-line judging by his statistics compared to the likes of Dunk and Webster.
