Brighton & Hove Independent writer Derren Howard has apprehensively flagged the threat of two Manchester United players ahead of their clash against Graham Potter’s Brighton on Tuesday.
The reporter is wary of the threat that Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford could pose to the Seagulls, especially if their options are limited defensively. He noted that centre-back Adam Webster could be doubtful for the Amex Stadium clash after going off with a hamstring injury in the midweek draw at Leicester.
Brighton have had two good results since the resumption of the Premier League, beating Arsenal 2-1 and drawing away to the third-placed Foxes. However, ahead of next Tuesday’s visit of the Red Devils, Howard wrote for Brighton & Hove Independent: “It will not get any easier for a Brighton defence who could also be without defender Adam Webster, who pulled up with a hamstring injury in the first half at Leicester and must be doubtful for United.
“Shane Duffy came on for Webster and performed well at the heart of the defence alongside skipper Lewis Dunk – and it could well be the tried and tested Duffy and Dunk combination tasked with stopping the double threat of Martial and Marcus Rashford next Tuesday.
“It’s a tricky dilemma for Potter as Dunk is on nine bookings and another caution (easy to get against the pace of Rashford and Martial) would see Dunk miss the Norwich and Liverpool matches.”
Who will win between Brighton and Man United?
Howard’s apprehension about the threat of Martial and Rashford is quite understandable. The pair have scored 19 goals each this season, with the Frenchman helping himself to a hat-trick in Manchester United’s 3-0 romp over Sheffield United on Wednesday. He also set up two of the Red Devils’ goals when they beat Brighton 3-1 in November, one of which was an assist for Rashford to score (as per TransferMarkt).
The journalist’s point about the Seagulls’ concerns in terms of defensive personnel are also pertinent. Although Duffy is an experienced Premier League player to call upon, Webster has been a regular starter this season, while the discernible possibility of Dunk getting booked and picking up a two-match ban is also cause for concern – he was shown a yellow card in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford seven months ago.
Brighton’s defence can take heart from managing to prevent Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Jamie Vardy, two of the Premier League’s three top scorers, from finding the net in recent days. However, they will need to be every bit as alert and stoic against Manchester United’s lethal attacking duo who have already racked up 38 goals between them this term.
