Brighton duo Ezequiel Schelotto and Beram Kayal have committed to the club for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.
The pair had been due to leave the Amex Stadium next week with their contracts expiring on 30 June but, as reported by The Argus, both have signed short-term extensions to keep them in Sussex until the completion of the current campaign.
Schelotto was handed just his fourth Premier League start of the season in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, having played second fiddle to Martin Montoya for most of 2019/20. The Italian defender has registered a modest tally of 32 appearances since first coming to Brighton three years ago.
Having been restored to the bench for the midweek game at Leicester, the 31-year-old could only watch on as fellow right-back Tariq Lamptey made an accomplished Seagulls debut which saw him named as the club’s man of the match and win plaudits from Graham Potter afterwards.
At least he has managed to carve out some bit of a role in the manager’s plans. Kayal, on the other hand, has not featured at all under Potter at the Amex Stadium. He even went on loan to Charlton earlier in the season, with the move cut short in January as he underwent minor groin surgery. However, even with managers able to name a 20-man matchday squad since the Premier League resumed, the Israel midfielder hasn’t even been on the bench for Brighton.
While other Premier League players nearing the expiry of their contracts, such as Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick, turned down short-term deals at their respective clubs, at least Schelotto and Kayal have committed to Brighton for the rest of the season.
The Israeli’s time with the Seagulls certainly seems to be up given his long period of inactivity, although hopefully a man who has made 131 Brighton appearances will get a chance to add to that before the campaign finishes. Schelotto is also set to leave quietly, with his hopes of a starting berth likely to be diminished following the excellent display by Lamptey against Leicester.
Do you think Schelotto and Kayal will be missed at Brighton?
Both have served the club commendably but don’t expect either to feature heavily for Potter’s team despite penning those contract extensions.
Brighton fans, are you glad that Schelotto and Kayal have at least committed to the club for the remainder of the season? Comment below with your views!
