# Brighton & Hove Albion: Odsonne Edouard would cost the Seagulls £40m or more

**Brighton have discovered how much they would need to pay if they are to sign reported transfer target [Odsonne Edouard](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/brighton-transfer-rumours/brighton-join-odsonne-edouard-transfer-race/).**

[Sussex Live](https://www.sussexlive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/odsonne-edouard-celtic-arsenal-brighton-4471686) reported that Celtic have slapped a price tag of £40m on the French striker, with Arsenal and Leicester also among the Premier League clubs with a reported interest in the 22-year-old.

As per [Sussex Live](https://www.sussexlive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/odsonne-edouard-celtic-arsenal-brighton-4471686), the Hoops’ latest failure to reach the Champions League group stages could lead to the forward contemplating his situation at Parkhead.

Edouard, who was previously on Paris Saint-Germain’s books and [played for their youth team](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152/verein/41587) but [never made a senior appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152/verein/583), has been a revelation since moving to Celtic three years ago, going on to score [64 goals in 130 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152/verein/371) for the Scottish champions.

After scoring [27 goals last term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/344152), including 21 league goals and five in their Europa League campaign, he has netted [four goals in as many matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdaten/spieler/344152) in the early weeks of the current season, although he was a notable [omission from the Hoops’ last two fixtures.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/leistungsdaten/spieler/344152)

Brighton manager Graham Potter is firmly on the lookout for a new striker in the current transfer window, with the Seagulls also being linked with moves for £13.5m-rated Reims marksman Boulaye Dia ([A Bola](https://abola.pt/Nnh/Noticias/Ver/858903) via [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/08/30/report-reims-seek-13m-for-boulaye-dia-as-brighton-face-fresh-competition/)) and Almeria’s Darwin Nunez, who is valued at £23m ([The Argus](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/18670130.almeria-keen-push-price-darwin-nunez/)).

While those two options should cost far less than Edouard, the Celtic striker has prior experience of British football, along with playing in [both of Europe’s main club competitions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/344152). However, Dia has a [decent track record in Ligue 1](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/boulaye-dia/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/626913/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/FR1/verein/1421), which is higher than the Scottish Premiership in [UEFA’s association club coefficient](https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/#/yr/2020).

Edouard’s goal record at Celtic is indisputably excellent, as is his return of [11 goals in six caps](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/odsonne-edouard/nationalmannschaft/spieler/344152/verein_id/9323) for the French under-21 side, but Brighton still need to consider whether they can justify paying £40m or more for him.

It would involve them at least doubling their current joint-record transfer outlay of £20m, paid for the respective acquisitions of Neal Maupay and Adam Webster (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brighton-amp-hove-albion/transferrekorde/verein/1237)); and at a time when the global pandemic has [impacted on clubs’ finances](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jun/11/premier-league-clubs-set-for-500m-collective-loss-due-to-coronavirus), the Seagulls might not have the reserves to meet Celtic’s asking price.

\[freshpress-poll id=”316445″\]

Also, with Maupay proving a [reliable scorer at Premier League level](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neal-maupay/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/217115) and Aaron Connolly [emerging last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aaron-connolly/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/434207), Edouard fits the category of ‘nice to have’ rather than ‘must-have’ at Brighton.
