# Brighton & Hove Albion: Ivan Toney linked with summer move to Amex Stadium

**Brighton are reportedly set to renew their transfer interest in Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney over the summer.**

[The Sun](https://www.the-sun.com/sport/premier-league/1048811/southampton-fraser-forster-celtic-ntcham/) reported \[via [Sussex Live](https://www.sussexlive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/brighton-linked-10million-move-former-4271813)\] that the Seagulls had been closing in on a move for the 24-year-old until the League One season was curtailed but are now primed to make another push for him, with Posh reportedly valuing the player, whose current contract [expires next year](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/profil/spieler/251664), at £10m.

According to [The Sun](https://www.the-sun.com/sport/premier-league/1048811/southampton-fraser-forster-celtic-ntcham/), Brighton are keen to add another striker in the transfer window but are working within a budget and are reluctant to pay ‘crazy money’ for new signings.

Toney enjoyed a magnificent season for Peterborough, netting [24 times in 32 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdaten/spieler/251664) in League One and becoming the division’s top scorer. It wasn’t a freak campaign for the 24-year-old, either, as he had struck [16 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/251664) in the third tier in the previous term.

The one question mark that perhaps hangs over him is that his scoring feats have come at League One level and not any higher, with the striker managing just two scoreless Premier League appearances for Newcastle back in 2015/16. Therefore, he remains virtually untested in the top flight. \[via [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/251664)\]

However, Brighton have previous in seeking out strikers who have excelled in the Football League. Last summer, the Seagulls [spent £20m on Neal Maupay](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11741/11778239/neal-maupay-signs-for-brighton-from-brentford-on-four-year-deal) after he hit [25 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neal-maupay/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/217115) for Brentford in the Championship in 2018/19.

The Frenchman’s only top-tier experience prior to then was a [far from prolific spell in Ligue 1](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neal-maupay/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/217115) but he has adapted very well to the Premier League, with [nine goals in 30 games i](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neal-maupay/leistungsdaten/spieler/217115)n the division this term helping to keep Graham Potter’s side on track for a [fourth successive season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brighton-amp-hove-albion/platzierungen/verein/1237) at that level.

If Brighton are to splash out a fee in the region of £10m for Toney, there will be an element of risk given that he has only scant top-flight experience and has never played in the Championship (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/251664)).

\[freshpress-poll id=”306908″\]

However, there would likely have been similar question marks over Maupay’s ability to make the step up from Football League to Premier League upon his £20m arrival last year and he has since banished those emphatically, so perhaps Toney could make a similarly successful transition to top-flight football if he were to move to the Amex Stadium.
