Brighton have been touted among the leading contenders to sign Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, who was previously on loan with the Seagulls.
Lingard had a loan spell with Brighton back in 2014, when he scored four goals in 17 appearances, and has since gone on to play 207 times for Manchester United. However, having netted 13 goals in the 2017/18 season and subsequently featured for England at the World Cup, he made just nine Premier League starts last term and did not score in the division until stoppage time on the final day.
United’s recent capture of Donny van de Beek, as well as the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes, has heightened the competition for attacking midfield berths at Old Trafford, with the 24-cap England international risking being reduced to a peripheral role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian has hailed Lingard as having “different qualities to other players” at Old Trafford but the midfielder has come under heavy criticism over the quality of his performances, as well as his social media activities.
While there is heavy competition for attacking midfield places at United, the same can be said for Brighton. Aside from Pascal Gross, the Seagulls have Alexis Mac Allister breaking into the first team, Steven Alzate returning from long-term injury and Adam Lallana, a Premier League and Champions League winner over the last 15 months, brought in from Liverpool this summer.
Lingard can be a tremendous player, as he showed during a prolific 2017/18 campaign and his subsequent displays at the World Cup in Russia.
However, a tally of one Premier League goal since Christmas 2018 is not what one might expect from a Manchester United attacking midfielder, while Brighton already have several options in that area of the pitch.
Would you like to have Jesse Lingard back at Brighton?
With the 27-year-old valued at £15.75m by TransferMarkt, he would likely cost a substantial amount, too, and the Seagulls would be best served by focusing their budget elsewhere.
