Brighton teenager Haydon Roberts is attracting the interest of clubs not just from the English Championship but also from Germany.
The Telegraph reported [via TEAMtalk] that the 18-year-old defender is a target for Championship trio Leeds, Brentford and Derby, while he has been scouted by two Bundesliga sides in RB Leipzig and Mainz.
Roberts has played primarily with Brighton’s underage ranks and so far has only one senior appearance to his name, although it was a rather memorable one as he found the net on his first team debut in the Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa last September.
His links with Leeds instantly evoke comparisons with Ben White, the 22-year-old who also plays at centre-back and who is on loan at Elland Road this season from the Amex Stadium. He has made quite an impression in Yorkshire, playing for the entirety of Leeds’ 42 league games so far and attracting transfer interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, prompting his parent club to stick a £35m price tag on him.
Leipzig would also be an interesting destination for Roberts, with the German club displaying a tendency to give young British talent its fling. Both Ademola Lookman and Ethan Ampadu have transferred to the Bundesliga side, with the former signing permanently after an initial loan spell and the latter going there on loan from Chelsea during the 2019/20 season.
Brighton are already well-stocked for centre-backs with Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster and Shane Duffy, while White could also come into the fold next season if the Seagulls can persuade him to stay with the club.
Can Haydon Roberts follow in the footsteps of Ben White?
Therefore, a loan spell for Roberts could be ideal so that he can gain valuable first team experience, with such an arrangement working a charm for White at Leeds this season.
Brighton fans, would you be in favour of a loan move for young Roberts given White’s success at Leeds? Comment below with your views!
