The local media outlet claimed that, despite the Seagulls submitting a bid of €25m (£22.26m) which seemed to trump Benfica’s offer, the Portuguese club are confident that they have won the race for the 21-year-old.
Brighton’s interest in Nunez was initially reported by La Voz de Almería in early August, with Sheffield United also linked with interest in the Uruguay international, but it now seems that neither Premier League club will secure his services.
The reported failure of the Seagulls to clinch a deal for the centre-forward came on the same day that veteran striker Glenn Murray was loaned out to Watford for the season, which leaves Graham Potter’s options in that area looking a lot more threadbare.
Aside from Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly, his centre-forward alternatives are Florin Andone, who endured a wretched injury-plagued loan spell at Galatasaray, and rarely-seen Swedish marksman Viktor Gyokeres.
With Almeria reportedly demanding £23m for a striker whose only top-flight experience has come in his native Uruguay, missing out on Nunez may not be the worst thing to happen to Brighton, as they can instead direct their budget towards more affordable signings.
Will Brighton regret missing out on Darwin Nunez?
However, with the 21-year-old seemingly out of reach and Murray exiting on loan, Potter may need to quickly readjust his focus to getting in another striker, with just over a month left in the current transfer window.
