Brighton could have been a boost in the hunt for one of their transfer targets after a sudden turn of events.
Football Insider reported that QPR winger Bright Osayi-Samuel has backed out of his proposed £5m move to Club Brugge despite being due to go for a medical with the Belgian club, seemingly preferring to remain in England instead.
Earlier this week, Football Insider had claimed that the Seagulls, along with Leicester and Fulham, had maintained an interest in the 22-year-old and were all willing to match Club Brugge’s £5m offer if given the opportunity.
Osayi-Samuel has enjoyed a fruitful season with QPR, scoring six goals and providing nine assists in 39 appearances for the west London club – a return which has sparked interest from Premier League clubs such as Brighton.
With the R’s set to finish in the bottom half of the Championship, the highest level of football at which the winger has played so far in his career, the lure of top-flight football could entice him elsewhere, and that is something that the Seagulls can offer him for next season.
The 22-year-old has a flair for taking on opponents, completing 2.9 dribbles and drawing 1.9 fouls per game. He can also be dangerous with the ball at his feet, averaging 1.2 shots and 1.2 key passes per game this season. [via WhoScored]
He has certainly had a better campaign than Brighton’s only natural right winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who has plundered just two goals in 11 appearances in 2019/20 and struggled to convince manager Graham Potter.
The collapse of Osayi-Samuel’s move to Club Brugge has offered Brighton fresh hope of landing the 22-year-old, especially as it was his decision to back out of the transfer to Belgium, which could indicate that he prefers to stay in England.
Would you like to have Bright Osayi-Samuel at Brighton?
Having shown better form than Jahanbakhsh in recent months and with a likely hunger to prove his worth in the Premier League, he could be a shrewd acquisition for the Seagulls if they land him, while a rough price of £5m is one that the Sussex club should easily be able to afford given their continued top-flight status.
