# Burnley: Clarets approach Bournemouth to sign Adam Smith

**Burnley have made an approach to Bournemouth to sign defender Adam Smith, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-burnley-make-approach-to-sign-bournemouth-defender/).**

The report claimed that the Clarets have made an enquiry about the 29-year-old, who is entering the final year of his current deal at the Vitality Stadium.

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-burnley-make-approach-to-sign-bournemouth-defender/) added that the Cherries are willing to listen to offers for their key players following their relegation from the Premier League and would rather sell the right-back now than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Smith, who is valued at £6.3m by [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-smith/profil/spieler/61841), played [144 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-smith/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/61841/wettbewerb/GB1) for Bournemouth in the Premier League and [238 times in total](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-smith/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/61841/verein/989) for the south coast club. He was a [regular feature in Eddie Howe’s line-up](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69877/History/Adam-Smith) for each of the Cherries’ five seasons in the top flight, which included 24 league starts last term.

During the 2019/20 season, he won two tackles and made one interception per game, while he proved adept at drawing fouls from opponents, winning 1.7 free kicks per match. The 29-year-old is also composed when in possession, recording a passing success rate of 79.5%. \[via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69877/Show/Adam-Smith)\]

Were he to sign for Burnley, he would be competing with Matthew Lowton and Phil Bardsley for a place in [Sean Dyche](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/burnley-fc-news/burnley-sean-dyche-optimistic-keep-key-players-summer-transfer-window/)‘s starting line-up. The Clarets’ right-back duo are [31 and 35 respectively](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley-fc/kader/verein/1132/plus/0/galerie/0?saison_id=2020), with Bardsley rapidly approaching the end of his career.

Both defenders [won more tackles and made more interceptions](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/184/Show/England-Burnley) per game than Smith last season, although the Bournemouth man has one clear advantage on the Burnley duo. In terms of passing accuracy, he far outstrips both Lowton ([68.6%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/184/Show/England-Burnley)) and Bardsley ([66.1%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/184/Show/England-Burnley)), with neither Clarets player being especially strong in retaining possession.

Smith has vast Premier League experience, is far better in possession than Burnley’s current right-back options and could be relatively easy to acquire, with Bournemouth open to offers for their key assets.

On several levels, this seems like a sensible target for the Turf Moor outfit and it’s no surprise that Dyche sees him as a possible successor to the ageing Bardsley, who may find himself phased out of first team contention if the Cherries defender makes the move north.
