# Burnley: Clarets set to battle West Ham in Bertrand Traore transfer race

**Burnley are reportedly keen on signing Lyon winger [Bertrand Traore](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-transfer-rumours/newcastle-bertrand-traore-transfer-interest-premier-league/), who previously [played in the Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996/saison/2015/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/631) for Chelsea.**

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-west-ham-set-sights-on-signing-traore-as-agent-given-mandate-to-seal-deal/) reported that the Clarets are joined by West Ham in the transfer race for the 24-year-old, who could be open to being sold by the Ligue 1 outfit after falling out of favour.

According to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-west-ham-set-sights-on-signing-traore-as-agent-given-mandate-to-seal-deal/), Lyon are willing to cash in on him now, with two years remaining on his current contract at the Groupama Stadium.

Traore, who made just [16 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996/verein/631) in his time at Chelsea, endured a difficult season for Lyon, scoring just [four goals in 35 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdaten/spieler/131996) as he struggled to hold down a regular starting berth.

However, his record with the Ligue 1 outfit is decent, with [33 goals in 126 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996/verein/1041) for the club and [21 goals in the French top tier](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996/wettbewerb/FR1/verein/1041). A return of [18 goals during the 2017/18 season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996) shows how much of an impact the Burkina Faso international can make when he is at his best.

[Generally a right winger](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131996) but also capable of leading the line, Traore could be a potent addition in an area where Burnley have struggled for goals. Johann Berg Gudmundsson, the most [obvious right-flank choice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/kadernachposition/verein/1132) currently in the squad, scored only once in an injury-hampered 2019/20 campaign (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/johann-berg-gudmundsson/leistungsdaten/spieler/89231)).

Indeed, the Clarets have a notable lack of depth on the right wing, where Gudmundsson is now the [only natural option](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/kadernachposition/verein/1132). [Dwight McNeil](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dwight-mcneil/leistungsdaten/spieler/584769) and [Josh Brownhill](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/josh-brownhill/leistungsdaten/spieler/293569) are also capable of playing in that role, but the June departures of [Jeff Hendrick and Aaron Lennon](https://www.newstalk.com/sport/burnley-confirm-hendrick-departure-dyche-say-banner-1035726) left Sean Dyche very sparse for right-sided options.

Traore may have had little look-in at Chelsea but, were he return to the Premier League, he would now be bolstered by regular top-level experience with Lyon, including [multiple Champions League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/131996).

\[freshpress-poll id=”313742″\]

A combination of a decent goal record, a sparsity of right winger options at Turf Moor, Lyon’s willingness to do a deal and a modest valuation of £8.55m (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bertrand-traore/profil/spieler/131996)) would point to the conclusion that the 24-year-old is exactly the type of player that Burnley should be targeting in the summer transfer window.
