# Burnley: Newcastle and Southampton join transfer race for Chris Wood

**Burnley striker [Chris Wood](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/burnley-fc-transfer-rumours/burnley-chris-wood-offered-lazio-transfer-news/) has reportedly had transfer interest from two other Premier League clubs.**

The print edition of [The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/) claimed \[via [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/08/16/report-newcastle-and-southampton-want-burnleys-chris-wood/)\] that Newcastle and Southampton are both interested in the 28-year-old, following reports from [Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/news/calcio/calcio-mercato/2020/08/09-72634265/_la_lazio_segue_joshua_king_del_bournemouth_/) \[via [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8609469/Chris-Wood-offered-Lazio-Serie-club-plan-bolster-squad-Burnley-star.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490)\] last week that he had been offered to Lazio.

According to [The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/) \[via [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/08/16/report-newcastle-and-southampton-want-burnleys-chris-wood/)\], the New Zealand international is valued at £13m by the Clarets despite still having three years left on his current contract.

Wood enjoyed an excellent 2019/20 season for Burnley, netting [14 Premier League goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-wood/leistungsdaten/spieler/108725) and finishing as their [top scorer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/leistungsdaten/verein/1132). That campaign wasn’t a freak occurrence for the 28-year-old, either, as he has hit double figures in the league of his three seasons at Turf Moor, as well as in the preceding two years at Leeds (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-wood/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/108725)).

His importance to Sean Dyche’s attack is emphasised by the fact that his 2019/20 goal tally was almost twice as much as fellow centre-forwards Matej Vydra and Ashley Barnes combined, while Burnley’s midfielders managed a paltry six goals between them. \[via [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/leistungsdaten/verein/1132)\]

Wood cost the Clarets a reported £15m (as per [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/41001685)) when he joined from Leeds three years ago as a player who was [virtually unproven in the Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-wood/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/108725). Having [since hit 34 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-wood/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/108725/wettbewerb/GB1) in the division, he has consistently shown that he belongs in the English top flight.

Indeed, the Yorkshire club had a [£22m offer for Ben White rejected](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12045292/ben-white-brighton-reject-22m-leeds-bid-for-defender) by Brighton recently, with the Seagulls [apparently holding out for £35m](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-liverpool-want-to-sign-pl-ace-electrifying-their-scouts-35m-may-seal-deal/) for a defender who has only played twice for the Sussex club and has [zero Premier League experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-white/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/335721).

Taking all of that into consideration, it seems baffling that Burnley reportedly value Wood at just £13m, particularly when they signed him for £2m more than that when he wasn’t the proven Premier League scorer that he has since become.

He would leave a huge scoring chasm for the Clarets to fill irrespective of the price for which he is sold, and in a market where clubs can seemingly demand £35m for players with no top-flight experience, it would be kamikaze stuff from Burnley to sell the potent Wood for a mere £13m, especially to a Premier League rival like Newcastle or Southampton.
