# Burnley: Fabian Delph is on Clarets’ transfer wish list

**Burnley are reportedly taking a ‘big interest’ in Everton midfielder Fabian Delph as possible successor to Jeff Hendrick in the Clarets’ midfield.**

That is according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter ([@reluctantnicko](https://twitter.com/reluctantnicko/status/1302513382499790848)), who claimed that the Turf Moor outfit have eyes on the 30-year-old, with the possibility of such a transfer depending on the price that Burnley will offer and the Toffees will demand.

> BURNLEY. Taking big interest in Delph at EVERTON. One of those who fits the vacancy left by Hendrick. Down to price etc.

Delph, a [20-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabian-delph/nationalmannschaft/spieler/50362/verein_id/3299) England international who has won [two Premier League titles](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabian-delph/erfolge/spieler/50362) with Manchester City, endured a rather forgettable 2019/20 campaign following his move to Everton from Pep Guardiola’s side.

\[freshpress-quiz id=”315369″\]

He [failed to score in just 20 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabian-delph/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/50362) in all competitions for the Toffees during an [injury-plagued season](https://everton.vitalfootball.co.uk/explained-every-injury-fabian-delph-suffered-in-his-debut-season-at-everton/) and [clashed with some of the club’s fans](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/everton-fabian-delph-angry-fans-21237164) on social media following their FA Cup exit to a [youthful Liverpool side](https://www.skysports.com/football/liverpool-vs-everton/421556) in January, with plenty of Everton supporters [hammering his lack of productivity](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/everton-fans-destroy-fabian-delph-as-carlo-ancelotti-gives-advice-over-injury-woes/) at Goodison Park.

Hendrick, who is [two years younger](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jeff-hendrick/profil/spieler/148262) than Delph, left Burnley after the [expiry of his contract](https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/jeff-hendrick-to-consider-next-move-after-turning-down-chance-to-stay-at-burnley-39308463.html) in June and recently [signed for Newcastle on a free transfer](https://www.the42.ie/jeff-hendrick-joins-newcastle-5184659-Aug2020/).

Delph posted a decent average of [1.6 successful tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/27213/Show/Fabian-Delph) per game last season, more than [any Clarets player in that position](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/184/Show/England-Burnley), but he seems a peculiar target if Dyche is looking for something different from that part of the pitch.

At 30, the Everton man is the same age as Ashley Westwood and only a year younger than Jack Cork, so the addition of a [third 30+ central midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/kader/verein/1132) seems to make little sense.

\[freshpress-poll id=”317342″\]

Also, Burnley could do with a greater goal output from that sector – Hendrick and Westwood, with five goals between them, were their only central midfielders to score last season (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/1132/plus/0?reldata=%262019)) – and Delph has scored a paltry [three goals in the past four years](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabian-delph/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/50362).

Given his injury record, his age and his lack of goal threat from midfield, it’s hard to see what the ex-Manchester City man could bring to the Clarets’ midfield that they don’t already have. Even if the Toffees are willing to accept a modest fee for him, Burnley should look elsewhere if they want to strengthen in the middle of the park.
