Burnley: Ali Koiki “stalling” on contract offer at Turf Moor

Burnley: Ali Koiki “stalling” on contract offer at Turf Moor - Burnley News

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has revealed that young defender Ali Koiki is “stalling” on the offer of a new contract with the club.

The Clarets boss gave the update on the future of the left-back at yesterday’s press conference, with the 20-year-old out of contract this summer and not included in the matchday squad for either of this week’s games against Manchester City and Watford.

As per Lancashire Live, Burnley will be entitled to compensation for the 20-year-old if he leaves the club in the coming weeks, given that he is under 24 years of age.

Koiki has yet to feature for Burnley’s first team, with four substitute appearances since December 2018 the closest he has come to a Clarets debut. Last season he had a loan spell at Swindon, where he played in 15 matches at League Two level.

His pathway at Turf Moor is blocked by Charlie Taylor and Erik Pieters, who have shared left-back duties between them this season, while the likes of Ben Mee, Matthew Lowton and Phil Bardsley couldĀ all deputise in that position if required.

Do you think Ali Koiki has a future at Burnley?

The 20-year-old didn’t even make the bench for Burnley’s defeat at Manchester City on Monday, despite Dyche being unable to name the full complement of nine substitutes and drafting in youngsters like Max Thompson and Bobby Thomas to make up the numbers. However, senior players such as Jeff Hendrick, Joe Hart and Aaron Lennon were notable absentees with one thing in common with Koiki – their contracts also expire next week.

That Koiki couldn’t even get onto a depleted substitutes’ bench at the Etihad Stadium this week is a damning indictment of his future prospects at Burnley.

What position did Burnley occupy in the table after the first round of matches, having beaten Southampton 3-0?

Dyche seems to have no intention of using players whose contracts are set to expire and his update on the lack of progress on a new deal for the young left-back suggests that the 20-year-old has no chance of featuring for the first team before he likely departs, with the Clarets faithful to be left wondering what might have been for him at Turf Moor.
