Burnley: Predicted XI to face Leicester

Burnley: Predicted XI to face Leicester - Burnley News

Burnley get their 2020/21 Premier League campaign underway tonight with a trip to Leicester City, who got off to a winning start last week.

The Clarets go into the game buoyed by progression to round three of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield United on Thursday and will therefore hope to take the bounce from that into the clash against the Foxes.

That result was marred by an injury to Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who joins Ben Mee, Ashley Barnes and Jack Cork on the treatment table. James Tarkowski missed the cup win over the Blades with a bruised toe and will continue to be assessed ahead of the match at the King Power Stadium (as per Lancashire Live).

With Dyche hamstrung by a relatively small squad, our predicted Burnley line-up for tonight shows just five changes from the team that started against Sheffield United:

Nick Pope is a certain starter in goal, with two changes to the defence in front of him. Charlie Taylor and Kevin Long keep their places from Thursday, although Tarkowski could go back into the team if he is able to feature, with Dyche perhaps reluctant to throw Jimmy Dunne into the Premier League fray having just made his senior Burnley debut three days ago. At right-back, Phil Bardsley could well come into the side in place of Matthew Lowton.

We also expect two amendments to the midfield from the Sheffield United game, one enforced by the injury to Gudmundsson. With no obvious right midfield alternative, Erik Pieters could start in that role, having played in the position a handful of times last season. Dwight McNeil is also set to come into the team on the other flank in place of Robbie Brady, with the central midfield pairing of Ashley Westwood and Josh Brownhill keeping their places from Thursday.

In attack, Jay Rodriguez could remain in the team having started against the Blades, except tonight he is likely to be partnered by Chris Wood, their top scorer from 2019/20, as he takes the place of Matej Vydra.

Most of Dyche’s team picks itself given the sparsity of the squad, but the burning question ahead of the Leicester game is whether the exit-linked Tarkowski will recover in time to make the starting line-up.
