Sean Dyche has to contend with multiple injury concerns for the visit of the Saints, with Jack Cork, Ben Mee and Johann Berg Gudmundsson all confirmed absentees while Robbie Brady and James Tarkowski are also questionable (as per premierinjuries.com). Jay Rodriguez is highly unlikely to be available, while the match might come too soon for the returning Ashley Barnes.
However, Burnley did secure the signing of Dale Stephens on Thursday – will he go straight into the team for tonight’s match? Here is our predicted XI, which shows seven changes from the side that started the midweek win over Millwall:
Nick Pope was given a rest in midweek but he should return between the sticks tonight. Charlie Taylor keeps his place from Wednesday but otherwise it’s all change across the defence, with Kevin Long coming back in and Tarkowski potentially returning as Dyche hinted that he “has a chance” of featuring. The 27-year-old could replace Jimmy Dunne, who despite his debut goal on Sunday may be rested after playing twice already this week. Phil Bardsley is in line to replace Matthew Lowton at right-back.
Midfield regulars Dwight McNeil and Ashley Westwood can both expect to start, with the latter coming back into the team after his substitute appearance at The Den. Stephens could be given his Clarets debut tonight, with Dyche hinting that he may have a part to play, which would see Josh Brownhill move to the right wing from the central role that he occupied against Millwall as Erik Pieters drops out.
Rodriguez went off injured in midweek and is highly doubtful for tonight, so Matej Vydra is set to keep his place in attack alongside the returning Chris Wood, who comes back in after being omitted from the starting XI on Wednesday.
