Burnley: Chris Basham emerges as Clarets transfer target - Burnley Transfer Rumours

Burnley are reportedly targeting Chris Basham in the summer transfer window, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The outlet claimed that the Clarets and Newcastle are both showing interest in the Sheffield United defender, who has just one year remaining on his current contract at Bramall Lane.

Basham has been a key component of a Sheffield United side who sit eighth in the Premier League, starting all 36 of their matches in the division this term. Indeed, the 31-year-old boasts the experience of 280 appearances for the Blades and also sampled the top flight with Bolton and Blackpool earlier in his career.

The centre-back has some excellent defensive statistics from the current campaign, with match averages of 4.4 clearances, 2.2 successful tackles, two interceptions and 2.9 successful headers. In terms of his ball distribution, he averages 34.7 passes per game, with a 74.5% success rate. [via WhoScored]

Would Chris Basham be a good signing for Burnley?

No

No

He is not as dominant in the air as Burnley’s two main centre-backs James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, who win 5.3 and 4.1 headers per game respectively. However, Basham has the better of the Clarets duo for several other metrics.

His tackling rate is better than both Tarkowski (1.7 per game) and Mee (1.3), while he also averages more interceptions per game than the Burnley pair (Tarkowski 1.7, Mee 1.3). His passing success rate is better than Sean Dyche’s two preferred centre-backs as well, with Mee boasting a 71.4% accuracy rate and Tarkowski finding a team-mate with 70.2% of his passes. Basham’s statistics certainly suggest that he could provide very strong competition for the established centre-back pairing of Mee and Tarkowski, although his potential arrival could have repercussions for other defenders at Turf Moor.

Kevin Long, who has stepped up commendably in Mee’s injury-enforced absence of late, could find it very hard to keep his place, while it could also accelerate the exit of the frozen-out Ben Gibson and prompt loan moves for young prospects like Jimmy Dunne and Bobby Thomas.

However, with Basham an experienced head who has proven he can perform in the Premier League, he would be a superb acquisition if Burnley could land him.
