Burnley striker Chris Wood has described recent transfer rumours linking him with a move to Serie A as “funny”.
Last month, Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport claimed [via Daily Mail] that the New Zealand international had been offered to Lazio, with his representatives informing the Rome-based club that the 28-year-old was keen on making the move to Italy.
However, Wood has now rubbished any such reports, telling Lancashire Live: “That wasn’t anything to do with my end. It’s always funny seeing them when you’ve heard nothing so it doesn’t matter.”
Rumours of a move to Lazio, who will be in this season’s Champions League, seemed rather surprising, given that Wood has never played in European competition and, aside from his formative years in his homeland, has spent his entire career in the English leagues.
Having scored 14 goals last season, the Serie A outfit weren’t the only side to be linked with the 28-year-old. Last month, The Mirror claimed [via HITC] that Newcastle and Southampton were both interested in the Clarets striker.
Will Chris Wood better his 14-goal tally from last season in 2020/21?
However, with the Magpies signing Callum Wilson from Bournemouth on Monday, their search for attacking reinforcements may now be fulfilled.
Wood has hit double figures in each of his three seasons at Turf Moor, with 2019/20 his most prolific campaign to date in Lancashire (as per TransferMarkt); and his penalty box prowess is crucial to a team who, despite finishing 10th, scored just three more goals than relegated Bournemouth in last season’s Premier League.
Wood recently indicated in an interview with New Zealand media outlet 1 News that he is aiming towards the 20-goal mark this season, with his comments seemingly hinting that he plans to do with with Burnley rather than in another league.
With interest from other clubs appearing to tail off since August, it seems that the 28-year-old is again focused on piling up the goals for the Clarets, something which will surely come as a relief to Sean Dyche and the Turf Moor faithful following recent transfer speculation.
