Burnley: Fabian Delph is on Clarets’ transfer wish list - Burnley Transfer Rumours

Burnley are reportedly taking a ‘big interest’ in Everton midfielder Fabian Delph as possible successor to Jeff Hendrick in the Clarets’ midfield.

That is according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter (@reluctantnicko), who claimed that the Turf Moor outfit have eyes on the 30-year-old, with the possibility of such a transfer depending on the price that Burnley will offer and the Toffees will demand.

Delph, a 20-cap England international who has won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, endured a rather forgettable 2019/20 campaign following his move to Everton from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Who were the opponents for Sean Dyche's first match as Burnley manager?

He failed to score in just 20 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees during an injury-plagued season and clashed with some of the club’s fans on social media following their FA Cup exit to a youthful Liverpool side in January, with plenty of Everton supporters hammering his lack of productivity at Goodison Park.

Hendrick, who is two years younger than Delph, left Burnley after the expiry of his contract in June and recently signed for Newcastle on a free transfer.

Delph posted a decent average of 1.6 successful tackles per game last season, more than any Clarets player in that position, but he seems a peculiar target if Dyche is looking for something different from that part of the pitch.

At 30, the Everton man is the same age as Ashley Westwood and only a year younger than Jack Cork, so the addition of a third 30+ central midfielder seems to make little sense.

Would Fabian Delph be a good signing for Burnley?

Also, Burnley could do with a greater goal output from that sector – Hendrick and Westwood, with five goals between them, were their only central midfielders to score last season (as per TransferMarkt) – and Delph has scored a paltry three goals in the past four years.

Given his injury record, his age and his lack of goal threat from midfield, it’s hard to see what the ex-Manchester City man could bring to the Clarets’ midfield that they don’t already have. Even if the Toffees are willing to accept a modest fee for him, Burnley should look elsewhere if they want to strengthen in the middle of the park.
