In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Steve Howey, who made 278 appearances during his career, admits he can't see former Newcastle United loanee Nabil Bentaleb joining Burnley this summer.

Bentaleb is set to be a free agent this summer after a troublesome few years in Germany, and Burnley have been linked with a move for the midfielder who also used to play for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Algerian was on loan with the Magpies for the second half of last season but failed to impress the fans or Steve Bruce, which saw him return to Schalke, and he has been part of the side which has been relegated to 2. Bundesliga for the first time in 30 years.

Speaking on what the chances are of Burnley signing Bentaleb and what other than his ability on the pitch may put off Sean Dyche, Howey spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern:

"Well, I can't see Sean Dyche putting up with him to be quite honest and I wouldn't be entertaining him myself if I'm being brutally honest.

"He has got ability but it must be so frustrating for managers when they know certain players have got ability but they just aren't performing week-in-week-out."

Dyche will be looking to add more strength in depth to a relatively thin Burnley squad, especially if Josh Brownhill is to leave as he has been linked with a move to Wolves.

Burnley's resounding 4-0 away win against Wolves has all but guaranteed their safety in the Premier League for yet another season.
