However, the midfielder has been shown since his arrival that he warranted such a fee, featuring regularly for the Clarets in making 139 appearances thus far.
Helping Burnley to sustain their Premier League status over the last few seasons, the Republic of Ireland international is set to do that again and ensure that his side make it five successive years in the top flight.
Despite Hendrick’s impressions at the club, though , the 28-year-old is set to be allowed to leave on a free transfer. Signing a fresh contract in December 2018 through to this summer, negotiations are yet to begin over a new deal and that has seen some tentative interest grow.
Italian duo AC Milan and AS Roma have now emerged as potential destinations for the Dublin-born midfielder, meaning Burnley could have to pull out all the stops if they want to retain his services.
Appearing 24 times this season, netting two goals and gaining two assists (as per Transfermarkt), Hendrick has continued to perform, gaining an average match rating of 6.55 this season from Whoscored.com, so it seems a bit strange that officials at Turf Moor have not secured a new deal.
Any chance of a new Burnley deal being signed by Hendrick may now be slipping away, especially with illustrious Serie A interest, and who could blame him if he was thinking about moving abroad. Moving to a club like Milan or Roma would be a huge step in the Irishman’s career, but one he has earned and is capable of turning into a success.
Hendrick’s value and performances have remained consistent since he switched from Derby to the Clarets and the chance of challenging for a Serie A title or playing in Europe would surely prove hard to turn down.
Burnley are a Premier League side but, whilst Hendrick may feel a loyalty to the club, being happy to finish mid-table or thereabouts every season would show little ambition from the midfielder. The 28-year-old could never have a better chance to take his game to the next step this summer, but that won’t be at Burnley if he signs on the dotted line.
Exploring a move away, potentially abroad, is now a ‘must’….
