# Burnley: Francesco Margiotta on Clarets’ transfer radar

**Burnley are interested in signing former Juventus striker Francesco Margiotta in the current transfer window.**

That is according to a report in the print edition of [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/) (31 August, page 62, via [HITC](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/09/01/report-burnley-make-4m-bid-for-2017-target-also-want-ex-juventus-forward/)), which claimed that the Clarets could soon make their interest known to the 27-year-old’s current club Luzern.

Margiotta is a [product of Juventus’ academy](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/transfers/spieler/165891) and looked a [promising talent with their underage sides](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/165891/verein/11008) but he [never managed to make an appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/165891) for the Bianconeri’s first team and had a [succession of loan spells](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/transfers/spieler/165891) away from Turin before moving to Lausanne in Switzerland, from where he [subsequently joined Luzern](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/transfers/spieler/165891).

He was a potent and creative presence for the Swiss top-flight outfit last season, [scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/165891) in all competitions. While primarily playing as a centre-forward, he has also dropped back to a number 10 role on a handful of occasions (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/165891/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/C1/verein/434)).

[Like Burnley](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=274&ha=-1), Luzern finished in a [mid-table position](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/raiffeisen-super-league/tabelle/wettbewerb/C1/saison_id/2019) in their league in 2019/20, with Margiotta’s goal tally the [same as the Clarets’ leading scorer Chris Wood](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/1132/plus/0?reldata=%262019) and [three more than Jay Rodriguez](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/1132/plus/0?reldata=%262019). He therefore seems to be on a similar level to that duo, albeit in a lower-ranked league on [UEFA’s association club coefficient](https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/).

Margiotta can score and create chances and has a cut-price [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/profil/spieler/165891) valuation of just £720,000, while Matej Vydra is the [only current backup](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-burnley/kadernachposition/verein/1132) to Burnley’s two main strikers with Ashley Barnes still [sidelined through injury](https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/football-news/burnley-injury-list-tarkowski-mee-18862268).

\[freshpress-poll id=”316657″\]

The Italian forward has never played at a [higher level than the Swiss Super League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/francesco-margiotta/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/165891) before, though, so even if he is purchased by [Sean Dyche](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/burnley-fc-news/burnley-sean-dyche-optimistic-keep-key-players-summer-transfer-window/), it would probably be with the intention of being a backup striker rather than an instant first team presence.
