# Burnley: Joe Hart admits that he had “difficult couple of years” at Turf Moor

**Former Burnley goalkeeper [Joe Hart](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-hotspur-joe-hart-signing-should-have-supporters-buzzing-opinion/) has admitted that his two-year spell at Turf Moor was “difficult” upon [completing his move to Tottenham](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53803874) this week.**

The 33-year-old was released by the Clarets this summer and, having made just [24 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hart/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/40204/verein/1132) under Sean Dyche, he acknowledged that he did not have the smoothest of times in Lancashire.

Speaking to [Spurs TV](https://twitter.com/SpursOfficial/status/1295700499866542080) \[via [Football.London](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/players/joe-hart-tottenham-transfer-mourinho-18788642?_ga=2.210003025.572555579.1597849959-1194075882.1560761803)\] upon signing for Jose Mourinho’s side, he said: “There’s no getting away from it, it has been a difficult couple of years for me personally on the football field but I feel I have so much to give.”

Hart cost Burnley a reported £3.5m (as per [BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45083130)) when he joined from Manchester City in 2018 and, with both Tom Heaton and Nick Pope [sidelined through injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45083130), he went [straight into the Clarets’ starting line-up](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hart/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/40204/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/1132).

However, over the first [19 Premier League games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hart/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/40204/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/1132) of that season, he shipped no fewer than 41 goals (2.16 per game) and managed only four clean sheets (21.1% of games), being [dropped after a 5-1 drubbing at home to Everton](https://www.football365.com/news/big-decisions-for-dyche-after-dropping-hart-for-heaton) as Heaton resumed his place upon recovering from injury.

The former England number one was limited to just three appearances last season, all in domestic cup competitions, and he conceded a further seven goals in those matches, including three in their Carabao Cup exit at home to League One Sunderland. \[via [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hart/leistungsdaten/spieler/40204)\]

While Hart was left [kicking his heels on the substitutes’ bench](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hart/leistungsdaten/spieler/40204), Pope excelled for Burnley during 2019/20, playing twice as many matches in the league as Hart managed the previous term and conceding only nine more goals while also keeping 15 clean sheets (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nick-pope/leistungsdaten/spieler/192080)).

Hart’s Burnley career never recovered from that Boxing Day 2018 nightmare against Everton and, with Pope performing so brilliantly between the sticks last season, the ex-Man City goalkeeper never stood much of a chance of getting back into the side.

It was a shame that the 33-year-old couldn’t manage to find his best form at Turf Moor but, so long as Pope is available and at his best, Clarets fans can feel satisfied with having a hugely dependable option as their last line of defence.
