# Celtic: Alan Hutton makes Stephen Welsh claim

**Pundit Alan Hutton believes Celtic could accept a £3m offer for defender Stephen Welsh following rumours of a move to Udinese, [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/celtic-tipped-to-accept-3m-welsh-bid-after-new-offer-tabled-pundit/) report.**

However, they have received interest in one of their own defenders in Welsh, described as [‘excellent’](https://thisisfutbol.com/2020/10/blogs/scottish-premier-league/celtic-pundit-praises-stephen-welsh/) by pundit Paul John Dykes.

Serie A side Udinese have had loan-to-buy and £1.6m offers [turned down](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/stephen-welsh-staying-celtic-defender-25906016?_ga=2.79065239.223476074.1641995917-1786335525.1548856907) by Celtic, with the club [‘keen’](https://twitter.com/AnthonyRJoseph/status/1479558717955846145) to keep hold of the 21-year-old.

### The Latest: Hutton’s comments

Hutton, who contributes for [BBC Radio 5 Live](https://icdb.tv/stats/3725/Alan-Hutton), was talking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/celtic-tipped-to-accept-3m-welsh-bid-after-new-offer-tabled-pundit/) regarding Welsh.

He believes that the Hoops could accept an offer of around £3m with a sell-on clause, should one arrive, almost double the £1.6m bid Celtic recently rejected.

### The Verdict: Going nowhere

Ange Postecoglou [revealed](https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/sport/19846483.ange-postecoglou-addresses-celtic-futures-stephen-welsh-jota-cameron-carter-vickers/) on Thursday that Welsh would be going nowhere this month, so that should be the end of the rumours.

He only signed a new contract until [2025](https://www.transfermarkt.com/stephen-welsh/profil/spieler/403568) back in April and has been relied on by Postecoglou on [19](https://www.transfermarkt.com/stephen-welsh/leistungsdaten/spieler/403568) occasions this season.

The Hoops have Cater-Vickers, Welsh, Carl Starfelt and the returning Christopher Jullien as [senior](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/kader/verein/371) centre-back options, so letting Welsh go would have been a gamble.

However, thankfully, it doesn’t look as if that will happen, even if they receive a £3m offer which Hutton thinks could tempt Celtic into parting ways.
