# Celtic: Bhoys to battle Leeds United for Stephan Ambrosius

**Celtic have joined Premier League side Leeds United in their pursuit to sign Hamburg defender Stephan Ambrosius in January, according to reports.**

### Ambrosius on Parkhead radar

The 21-year-old plays in the second tier of German football and recently received a call up to the Germany U21 squad ([TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spiel/index/spielbericht/3458991)).

During the current campaign, Ambrosius has featured in six full Bundesliga 2 encounters and has [piqued the interest](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/stephan-ambrosius-transfer-talks-expected-in-january/) of the Elland Road outfit since last month.

His head coach, Daniel Thioune, heaped huge praise on the German centre-back by describing him as a “[mentality player](https://footballghana.com/stephan-ambrosius-can-always-help-us-hamburg-coach-daniel-thioune)” who has “got what it takes” to be at the pinnacle of the game (cited by [Football Ghana](https://footballghana.com/hamburger-sv-manager-heaps-praise-on-ghanas-stephen-ambrosius)).

According to the German outlet Bild (cited by [Inside Futbol](https://insidefutbol.com/2020/11/25/celtic-showing-interest-in-leeds-united-linked-defender-with-expiring-contract/483014/)), Neil Lennon’s side are tracking Ambrosius ahead of a possible move during the January transfer window.

### Transfer Tavern Verdict

With the German’s contract due to expire at the end of the current campaign, it shows once again how much Celtic’s chief executive Peter Lawwell loves a bargain.

Due to the fact that the Bhoys have been defending poorly this season and the fact that they are already playing catchup to arch-rivals Rangers, this is a deal that could make sense.

Having played in a defensive midfield role previously, Ambrosius could give Lennon an element of added versatility in the defensive areas of his team.
