# Celtic: Callum McGregor set to be given prestigious Parkhead role

**Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor is lining up to become the next Bhoys’ captain and finish his career at Parkhead, reports suggest.**

### McGregor to take Brown reins

The 27-year-old came through the ranks at Lennoxtown and was [allegedly considering](https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/callum-mcgregor-wants-quit-celtic-3073866) leaving the club last summer to reunite with former Hoops’ boss Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City, but opted to stay in Glasgow.

McGregor has [taken the armband](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11787/12220022/callum-mcgregor-celtic-players-are-fully-behind-neil-lennon-says-stand-in-captain) on several occasions in Brown’s absence this season, who has been rotated for the likes of Ismaila Soro and David Turnbull. McGregor was described as a “metronome” by manager Neil Lennon (cited by [67 Hail Hail](https://www.67hailhail.com/news/neil-lennon-pays-unique-compliment-to-celtics-callum-mcgregor/)) in 2020 thanks to his passing and reading of the game.

Now, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/celtic-mcgregor-new-captain-deal/), the Scotsman is believed to be the prime candidate to take over from the 35-year-old when he leaves Parkhead or retires.

The report has added that this could occur as early as next summer – due to Brown’s contract expiring at the end of the 2020/21 campaign. But whispers suggest that he could potentially become a player-coach.

### Transfer Tavern Verdict

This will be a huge moment for Celtic and McGregor – and will almost feel like the end of an era, closely following by the birth of a new dawn.

It may unimaginable for some supporters to life without Brown in the side, since joining from Hibernian back in [2007](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2007/may/16/newsstory.sport6).

Time will tell whether this will go through. But if Brown does decide to leave, we believe the[£20k-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/ladbrokes-premiership/celtic/) earning McGregor is the only player that can step up to the plate given his already long tenure.
