# Celtic: Devlin provides inside update on Montgomery

**Celtic correspondent [Kieran Devlin](https://theathletic.com/3015442/2021/12/28/celtic-transfer-mailbag-japanese-signings-left-back-upgrade-and-what-about-barkas/?article_source=search&search_query=celtic) has revealed that youngster Adam Montgomery is viewed as the club’s future first-choice left-back.**

### The Lowdown: Montgomery under Postecoglou

The 19-year-old has been a regular in the matchday squad this season, failing to make the squad on just [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-montgomery/leistungsdaten/spieler/757272) occasions. He’s turned out on [18](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-montgomery/leistungsdaten/spieler/757272) occasions in all competitions and started in [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-montgomery/leistungsdaten/spieler/757272) of Celtic’s six Europa League group games.

Montgomery registered his first [assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-montgomery/leistungsdaten/spieler/757272) as a Hoops player against Aberdeen back in October and has featured as a left-back, left midfielder and left-winger.

Left-backs [Callum Styles](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/celtic-news/celtic-hoops-keen-on-callum-styles/) and [Aaron Hickey](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/celtic-news/celtic-hoops-still-keen-on-aaron-hickey/) have been linked with moves to Parkhead in recent weeks, however, it seems as if a full-back addition isn’t on the cards at this moment in time.

### The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Kieran Devlin shared a transfer mailbag on [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3015442/2021/12/28/celtic-transfer-mailbag-japanese-signings-left-back-upgrade-and-what-about-barkas/?article_source=search&search_query=celtic) on Wednesday, where he was asked about the possibility of the Hoops bringing in a new left-back.

He revealed that he hasn’t heard of any movement at left-back, with Reo Hatate, who can play at left-back, looking likely to be a midfield signing.

Devlin then claimed that a source close to the dressing room has admitted that the plan is for Greg Taylor to be the first-choice left-back for now, with Montgomery hopefully developing for the role in time.

### The Verdict: Smart move?

It seems as if Postecoglou has high hopes for Montgomery, who he described as having [‘tremendous composure’](https://www.67hailhail.com/news/adam-montgomery-hailed-by-ange-postecoglou-after-big-celtic-assist-yesterday/) earlier this season.

Celtic managed to cope without Taylor for [17](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/greg-taylor/leistungsdaten/spieler/362562) games, with [Montgomery](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-montgomery/leistungsdaten/spieler/757272), [Josip Juranovic](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/josip-juranovic/leistungsdaten/spieler/362977) and outcast [Boli Bolingoli](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/boli-bolingoli/leistungsdaten/spieler/168156) all featuring. Taylor has now returned from injury, and it seems as if imminent arrival Hatate will be able to provide cover at left-back if required too.

So, on that basis, a move for a left-back, with Styles and Hickey linked, doesn’t seem to be pivotal over the coming weeks due to the club’s hopes for Montgomery.
