# Celtic: Fans call for Mikey Johnston to start in Glasgow derby after signing new contract

**Celtic today announced that Mikey Johnston has signed a new five-year deal at Parkhead, keeping him with the Hoops until 2025.**

The new was confirmed on the club’s official website [celticfc.net](https://www.celticfc.net/news/17346) and shared on their official Twitter channel [@CelticFC](https://twitter.com/CelticFC/status/1210947325146935297).

The 20-year-old is a [product of Celtic’s academy](https://www.celticfc.net/news/17346) and has made [44 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikey-johnston/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/297257) for the first team, 17 of which have [come this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikey-johnston/leistungsdaten/spieler/297257).

The left winger has scored [six goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikey-johnston/leistungsdaten/spieler/297257) so far in 2019/20, the most recent of which [came against Ross County](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikey-johnston/leistungsdaten/spieler/297257) at the start of this month, although he has only [started once since his return](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikey-johnston/leistungsdaten/spieler/297257) from a [thigh injury](https://videocelts.com/2019/11/blogs/latest-news/lennon-gets-winger-injury-boost/) earlier in the campaign.

James Forrest has been [deployed on the left flank](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-forrest/leistungsdaten/spieler/84992) in recent games, with Ryan Christie [shifted to the right](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-christie/leistungsdaten/spieler/188077) to accommodate [Olivier Ntcham in an attacking midfield role](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/olivier-ntcham/leistungsdaten/spieler/224088).

Some of those tweaks by Neil Lennon [have not gone down well with a portion of Celtic fans](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/scottish-premier/celtic/celtic-fans-did-not-agree-with-james-forrest-being-played-on-the-left-wing-against-st-mirren/) and, following confirmation of Johnston’s new contract, these Hoops supporters on Twitter have called for the 20-year-old to be restored to the team on the left wing for tomorrow’s Glasgow derby against Rangers:
