# Celtic: Hoops close to Jota signing as medical booked in

**Celtic are close to a deal to bring Benfica winger Filipe Jota to Parkhead, with a medical scheduled for today, as reported by [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-jota-jets-in-to-undergo-celtic-medical-after-new-bid-accepted/).**

### The Lowdown: Jota is one of Portugal’s brightest young talents

Highly-rated in his native Portugal, Jota burst on to the scene at the UEFA Under-19 Championship in 2018, winning a place in the official team of tournament \[[UEFA](https://www.uefa.com/under19/news/0257-0dee5d528f37-d719efae43a3-1000--under-19-euro-team-of-the-tournament/?referrer=%2Funder19%2Fnews%2Fnewsid%3D2565932)\].

He has earned high praise during his fleeting career, even once being complimented by Manchester City winger Bernardo Silva, who urged the Premier League champions to sign the [5 foot 9](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jota/profil/spieler/329812) ace in 2019 \[[Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/who-filipe-jota-celtic-transfer-24858022)\].

Following a loan spell at [Real Valladolid](https://www.football-espana.net/2020/11/23/jorge-mendes-recommended-real-valladolids-portuguese-matchwinner-at-granada-personally-to-ronaldo-nazario) last term, he looks set for a switch to Glasgow after recent reports emerged.

### The Latest: Medical booked; loan-to-buy deal with £6.5m fee

Owing to a source close to Celtic at [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-jota-jets-in-to-undergo-celtic-medical-after-new-bid-accepted/), the Hoops are said to have agreed a deal to bring in the 22-year-old on an initial loan deal for the 2021/22 campaign.

There is also an option inserted within the agreement to make the move permanent for around £6.5m upon the conclusion of the season. He will undergo a medical at Lennoxtown today before the deal is formalised.

### The Verdict: Jota would add flair and creativity to the Celtic attack

With the future of Ryan Christie [up in the air](https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-opens-up-on-potential-celtic-exits-of-odsonne-edouard-and-ryan-christie-3363125) moving into the final stretch of the transfer window, acquiring another player who can operate on the left-hand side of attack makes business sense for the Scottish giants.

The notion of a loan-to-buy transfer will also appeal to the Hoops hierarchy, enabling Ange Postecoglou to assess the Portugal under-21 international over the season before deciding whether or not to offer him a longer-term stay at Celtic.

In 2020/21, the Lisbon-born talent gained valuable experience in the La Liga and Copa Del Rey, notching two goals in 18 appearances \[[Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jota/leistungsdaten/spieler/329812/plus/0?saison=2020)\]. Famed for his desire to dribble at defenders, the pacey wide man previously managed to post the second-best dribble success rate in the 2019/20 Liga NOS, with 7.83 per match \[[Total Football Analysis](https://totalfootballanalysis.com/player-analysis/jota-201920-scout-report-tactical-analysis-tactics)\].

All things considered, this deal represents savvy business for Celtic and could seriously strengthen their prospects of winning the Premiership in 2021/22.
