# Celtic: Hoops interested in Brandon Soppy

**Celtic are interested in signing Rennes defender Brandon Soppy, according to reliable journalist [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1413955543836856324).**

### The Lowdown: Soppy profiled

Soppy is 19 years of age and is under contract with the Ligue 1 side [until 2022](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/profil/spieler/546880).

The France youth international has made [11](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/leistungsdaten/spieler/546880) senior appearances for Rennes so far. He is [primarily a right-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/profil/spieler/546880) but has also turned out as a [centre-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/profil/spieler/546880).

He is on [£2,500 per week](https://salarysport.com/football/ligue-1/stade-rennais-fc/) with his current employers and holds a [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/marktwertverlauf/spieler/546880) valuation of £6.3m – [the 31st highest for players born in 2002](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spieler-statistik/wertvollstespieler/marktwertetop/plus/0/galerie/0?ausrichtung=alle&spielerposition_id=alle&altersklasse=alle&jahrgang=2002&land_id=0&kontinent_id=0&yt0=Show).

### The Latest: Romano’s Twitter post

[Romano posted on Twitter](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1413955543836856324) on Saturday night, describing Soppy as a ‘huge talent’, with talks opened between Celtic and Rennes.

However, he appeared to make a slight mistake by claiming that Soppy was a left-back target, tweeting: “Celtic are interested in signing Brandon Soppy from Rennes \[19, huge talent\] as new left back. Talks opened – but there are also French clubs in the race.”

[L’Equipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Transferts-brandon-soppy-rennes-sur-le-depart/1269676) backed up Celtic’s interest on Sunday morning, claiming that Rennes will set the bar at €5m (£4.27m).

### The Verdict: Right-back additions are needed

Following the permanent exits of [Jeremie Frimpong](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55814273) and [Hatem Elhamed](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/hatem-abd-elhameds-celtic-exit-23478182) earlier this year, Celtic are in need of right-back reinforcements rather quickly – Anthony Ralston is currently their [only natural option](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/kadernachposition/verein/371) in that role.

It’s an area of the pitch where Ange Postecoglou [wants to recruit](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9771681/Celtic-rejoin-race-Liverpool-outcast-Ben-Davies-Ange-Postecoglou-keen-sign-defenders.html) before the Hoops’ Champions League qualifier, and Soppy could be a better target than Sheffield United’s George Baldock, for whom [Celtic were willing to pay £8m](https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-celtic-will-adopt-this-increasingly-familiar-tactic-if-they-decide-to-firm-up-their-interest-in-george-baldock-3292516).

[Soppy](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brandon-soppy/profil/spieler/546880) is nine years Baldock’s junior, is valued at £1.8m more than [the Blades man](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/george-baldock/profil/spieler/146690) and would more than likely be a better long-term addition.

Celtic aren’t the only side interested in the teenager, though, so they may have to act fast and possibly pay over the odds for his services.
