# Celtic: Hoops make Nathan Byrne enquiry

**Celtic have made an enquiry to Derby County over a potential move for Nathan Byrne, according to [The Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/carl-starfelt-gets-celtic-start-24587439).**

### The Lowdown: Byrne profiled

Byrne is [mainly a right-back but can also play as a left-back or a right-midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/profil/spieler/121276). The 29-year-old has [just 12 months left on his Derby deal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/profil/spieler/121276) and is currently valued at [£1.35m by Transfermarkt – the highest of his career](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/marktwertverlauf/spieler/121276).

He’s made [184](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/leistungsdaten/spieler/121276) League One appearances and [148](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/leistungsdaten/spieler/121276) Championship appearances – becoming a [regular for the Rams last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/leistungsdaten/spieler/121276/plus/0?saison=2020).

The former Tottenham youngster, described as[‘vocal’ by journalist Ryan Conway](https://thisisfutbol.com/2021/03/blogs/championship/derby-county/derby-county-ryan-conway-praises-nathan-byrne-after-millwall-defeat/), is on [£8,900-a-week with Derby](https://salarysport.com/football/player/nathan-byrne/).

### The Latest: Recent report

[The Daily Record](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/carl-starfelt-gets-celtic-start-24587439) shared a transfer story on Celtic on Wednesday evening after [the Hoops announced the signing of centre-back Carl Starfelt](https://twitter.com/CelticFC/status/1417901463712505865).

They suggested that Sheffield United right-back George Baldock is a top target, however, the question has also been asked to Derby regarding Byrne.

The [report](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/carl-starfelt-gets-celtic-start-24587439) adds that Celtic’s scouting staff flagged up a possible swoop for Byrne, but Ange Postecoglou is yet to give a transfer the green light.

### The Verdict: Down to Ange

Postecoglou has [reportedly](https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-celtic-set-to-adopt-a-familiar-tactic-in-their-pursuit-of-george-baldock-3301325) watched footage of a number of right-back targets, and with no director of football in place to bounce ideas off, a new signing will of course be down to him.

[Byrne](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathan-byrne/profil/spieler/121276) could well be the cheaper option over [Baldock](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/george-baldock/profil/spieler/146690), with a £3.15m difference in Transfermarkt valuations.

However, with [Celtic selling Kristoffer Ajer to Brentford for an initial £13.5m](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11748/12356882/brentford-transfer-news-celtic-defender-kristoffer-ajer-signs-for-premier-league-newcomers), there should be plenty of funds to bring in a senior right-back as soon as possible.
