Celtic and Brentford were also watching the striker that night too. [#pufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/pufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > — Gregor MacGregor (@GeeMacGee) [January 23, 2020](https://twitter.com/GeeMacGee/status/1220420035916828674?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/THE-BREAKDOWN.png) Toney has been in excellent form for Peterborough in English League One, with [19 in 32 games in all competitions](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/134240/Show/Ivan-Toney) this term following on from his [32-goal haul in 55 matches last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/251664). Celtic’s scouts chose a good time to see him in action, too, with the ex-Newcastle striker [scoring twice](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1382114/Live/England-League-One-2019-2020-Peterborough-Wycombe) in the Posh’s 4-0 thrashing of [second-placed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/league-one/tabelle/wettbewerb/GB3/saison_id/2019) Wycombe on Tuesday to cement his place as [the division’s top scorer with 17 goals](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/8/Seasons/7841/Stages/17630/PlayerStatistics/England-League-One-2019-2020) to his name. The 23-year-old is evidently a striker with a fine scoring record, although it should be noted that the vast majority of his career goals have [come in the lower echelons of the English Football League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/251664). His only top-flight experience amounts to two substitute appearances for Newcastle in 2015/16 which totalled 10 minutes (as per [TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivan-toney/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/251664/plus/0/saison/2015/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/762)). Toney would also be up against some strong competition for the centre-forward berth at Celtic, whose manager Neil Lennon [regularly starts with just one striker](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/spielplandatum/verein/371). Odsonne Edouard is [most often that man](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/leistungsdaten/verein/371), which is easy to understand given that his [17 goals make him the Hoops’ joint-top scorer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/leistungsdaten/verein/371) for the season so far. Aside from the Frenchman, Leigh Griffiths has also enjoyed a revival of late with [two goals in a week](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leigh-griffiths/leistungsdaten/spieler/45611) taking him to [five in 683 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leigh-griffiths/leistungsdaten/spieler/45611) of game-time this term (one every 136.6 minutes), while the Scottish champions spent £3.5m to bring Klimala to the club earlier this month (as per [The Scottish Sun](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/5163857/celtic-transfer-news-patryk-klimala-complete/)) off the back of scoring [seven goals in 17 league games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patryk-klimala/leistungsdaten/spieler/387153) for Jagiellonia Bialystok in his native Poland. ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Verdict.png) Although Toney has a magnificent scoring record for Peterborough, and even with Lennon [playing with two strikers in Celtic’s last couple of games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/spielplandatum/verein/371), the 23-year-old would probably face a struggle to get into the starting XI were he to join the Scottish champions. The Hoops already have one striker in Vakoun Issouf Bayo who, having [played just 330 minutes and scored once](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/leistungsdaten/verein/371) this season, looks surplus to requirements. Also, after spending £3.5m on Klimala, Lennon will most likely want to give him a decent chunk of action over the next few months, and with the in-form Edouard and Griffiths also in the mix, Celtic don’t seem to have any great need for Toney right now. ***Celtic fans, would Toney be a decent addition given his fine scoring form or would he be a superfluous presence at the club given the presence of several other strikers?
