# Celtic: January target Adam Reach is released

**Sheffield Wednesday [confirmed](https://twitter.com/swfc/status/1395374553791188993) their player retention list on Thursday afternoon, and it could be of interest to Celtic.**

### The Lowdown: Celtic were keen on Reach

Winger Adam Reach was strongly [linked](https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/19001323.championship-transfer-rumours-rangers-celtic-ready-reach-sheffield-wednesday-star/) with a move to Celtic Park back in January.

The Hoops, along with rivals Rangers, were thought to be [monitoring his situation ahead of a possible pre-contract agreement](https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/19001323.championship-transfer-rumours-rangers-celtic-ready-reach-sheffield-wednesday-star/).

As we now know, Celtic’s only pre-contract agreement with a Sheffield Wednesday player was with Liam Shaw, with the [teenager moving to Scotland this summer](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/6693271/celtic-shaw-pre-contract-sheffield-wednesday-lennon-plans/).

However, Celtic now have another chance to land Reach for nothing.

### The Latest: Reach released

The Owls, who were [relegated to League One earlier this month](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56953366), [confirmed that 10 players](https://www.swfc.co.uk/news/2021/may/owls-confirm-202021-retained-list/) will be released when their deals expire this summer.

One of those is Reach, with the 28-year-old set to end his [five-year association](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-reach/profil/spieler/163530) with the club.

He’s made [230](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-reach/leistungsdaten/spieler/163530) appearances at Hillsborough, with [49](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-reach/leistungsdaten/spieler/163530) of those coming in the 2020/21 campaign.

### The Verdict: A good utility addition?

In our opinion, Reach could be a shrewd signing by the Hoops, should the new Celtic manager want him.

He was described as [‘creative’ by journalist George Elek just last month](https://thisisfutbol.com/2021/04/blogs/championship/sheffield-wednesday/sheffield-wednesday-george-elek-praises-adam-reach/), mainly turning out on the [left-hand side of midfield](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-reach/leistungsdaten/spieler/163530).

However, Reach also played in [six other positions in recent months](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-reach/leistungsdaten/spieler/163530), so could be a handy acquisition in Glasgow who can add depth in multiple positions.

His Wednesday deal is thought to be worth [£20,000-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/scottish-premiership/celtic/), so that could prove to be a stumbling block, especially as [Celtic’s top earner now being Callum McGregor on the same salary](https://salarysport.com/football/scottish-premiership/celtic/), which may make him one of the club’s top earners.
