# Celtic: Journalist links Hoops with Jamie McGrath

**Celtic have been urged to make a move for St Mirren midfielder Jamie McGrath by [The Herald’s James Cairney](https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/19626391.jamie-mcgrath-solution-celtics-midfield-dilemma/).**

### The Lowdown: McGrath profiled

McGrath, labelled as [‘different class’](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/7663719/st-mirren-goodwin-coronavirus-irish-mcgrath/) by Jim Goodwin, is 25 years of age and is primarily an [attacking midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/profil/spieler/344107) who can also play on [either wing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/profil/spieler/344107).

His St Mirren contract, worth just [£610-a-week](https://salarysport.com/football/scottish-premiership/st.-mirren/), is [up at the end of the campaign](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/profil/spieler/344107). McGrath hasn’t missed a minute of Scottish Premiership action this season and has made [69](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/leistungsdaten/spieler/344107) appearances for his current employers, scoring [19](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/leistungsdaten/spieler/344107) times and registering [seven](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/leistungsdaten/spieler/344107) assists.

### The Latest: Cairney’s claim

Cairney shared a story on [The Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/19626391.jamie-mcgrath-solution-celtics-midfield-dilemma/) on Wednesday, looking at McGrath.

He compared him to Tom Rogic and believes the [Republic of Ireland international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-mcgrath/profil/spieler/344107) could be picked up by Celtic in a relatively cheap January transfer due to his contract situation.

Cairney described it as a low-risk swoop due to the finances that could be involved for McGrath, who has shown ‘great promise’ in Paisley.

### The Verdict: Worth a punt?

The Hoops are fairly [short](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/kader/verein/371) of senior central midfield options at this moment in time, with Ange Postecoglou relying heavily on [Rogic](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/leistungsdaten/spieler/213672), [Callum McGregor](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-mcgregor/leistungsdaten/spieler/120977) and [David Turnbull](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-turnbull/leistungsdaten/spieler/345760).

On that basis, a cut-price move for McGrath could be a wise move. He knows the division extremely well and has been St Mirren’s best-rated performer this season. \[[WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/106/Show/Scotland-St-Mirren)\]

Celtic have reaped the rewards by bringing in Turnbull from Motherwell [last year](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53888200), and who knows, McGrath could be the next smart SPL addition.
