# Celtic: Liam Scales move likely

**Celtic’s move for Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales is looking probable, according to [The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin](https://theathletic.com/2772829/2021/08/17/celtic-score-az-alkmaar-europa-league-first-leg/).**

### The Lowdown: Monday update

[Reports](https://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/soccer/soccer-news/shamrock-rovers-take-spoils-liam-24765062) on Monday suggested that Scales is set for a Celtic switch.

The 23-year-old is thought to be Parkhead bound before the end of the month for an upfront fee of [€600,000](https://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/soccer/soccer-news/shamrock-rovers-take-spoils-liam-24765062) plus add-ons.

Scales, who can play as a [centre-back or a left-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-scales/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/439497), was recently described as [‘brilliant’](https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/sport/19515839.liam-scales-celtic-latest-shamrock-rovers-boss-drops-transfer-hint/) by Shamrock boss Stephen Bradley and it seems as if he will join Josip Juranovic at Celtic Park, with the Legia Warsaw man set to fly to Scotland on the [weekend](https://twitter.com/SkySportsLyall/status/1427989629362388997) ahead of a [£2.5m](https://twitter.com/SkySportsLyall/status/1427696715612704772) move.

### The Latest: Devlin claim

[Devlin](https://theathletic.com/2772829/2021/08/17/celtic-score-az-alkmaar-europa-league-first-leg/), Celtic’s correspondent for The Athletic, ran a Q&A regarding the AZ Alkmaar first leg on Wednesday.

Before the game, he was asked about left-back Boli Bolingoli’s future, which he described as a ‘strange’ situation.

Devlin then went on to say that a move for Scales is looking probable after a loan move for Ko Itakura fell through.

> “Don’t know about Bolingoli, it is a strange one. Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers is looking probable after the Itakura loan move fell through, so it is possible he might be looked to as cover/competition for both CB and LB.”

### The Verdict: Perfect

Celtic appear to be building for the future with the signings of youngsters [Liel Abada, Liam Shaw, Osaze Urhoghide](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-glasgow/transfers/verein/371) and [Joey Dawson](https://www.celticfc.com/news/2021/june/Celtic-sign-highly-rated-young-striker-Joey-Dawson/) this summer.

Bringing in Scales would be another step in the right direction in regards to the long-term plan, and he’ll be able to provide cover in two areas Ange Postecoglou could do with adding to.

He has [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/kader/verein/371/plus/0/galerie/0?saison_id=2021) senior centre-backs, one of which is injured and [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/celtic-fc/kader/verein/371/plus/0/galerie/0?saison_id=2021) left-backs without Bolingoli, and it seems as if Scales is set to move to Scotland over the coming weeks to ease the pressure on Postecoglou in those areas.
